From the family's first impromptu visit to moving in day for our Dad, we have been thoroughly impressed with every aspect of care, compassion, and service at Hawthorne Gardens. Dad was amazed when he came from Rehab this week and was warmly welcomed by many members of the staff. (He said he couldn't believe they all knew his name!) Although we are new to this organization, we are confident that this will be a wonderful experience for our father. Leaving the apartment door open as we readied his room, it was comforting to hear staff work with residents and treat them with dignity and respect, and yes, humor. One needs to laugh whenever possible! The facility is both inviting and clean, with many lovely nooks for relaxing or having a cup of coffee, or one of the many delicious snacks that greet residents daily. It truly has a homey vibe, and is tastefully decorated for the season. We chose a one bedroom apartment for Dad, and the flooring was redone to our specifications, as well as other changes that would provide him more security and comfort. The neighborhood view from his windows is free... and beautiful. The meals have been critiqued favorably by Dad. If you knew my Dad, you would know that this is a big deal, so kudos to the culinary staff. From reception to marketing and administration, caregivers to nursing and medical staff, housekeeping to maintenance, activity coordinator to "Dawn in the Salon," we thank you all and look forward to being part of your family.

Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living Community is a small community. The marketing agent was wonderful. She was very helpful to us. My friend is a veteran, so we were having a lot of difficulty working with the Veterans Association getting records and that sort of thing, and she was able to help expedite all of that and get what we needed from the VA. We also love the facility the way that it looked, and the proximity to his support group, it's very close to those who are concerned about his care. Also, it's in a great residential neighborhood, so he'll be able to walk around the property there. Those were the reasons why we're attracted to Hawthorne Gardens. My friend is pretty much a quiet and private person, so we didn't go into so many activities because that doesn't apply to him so much, but there are activities with that facility should he choose to participate in them. The room is very clean, spacious, bright, light, and airy, so we were very taken with the room.

Moving my uncle into Hawthorne Gardens Assisted Living is a regret I will live with for the rest of my life. He moved in July 2020 and died there in April of 2021. Care plans are not done in a timely manner. In fact, I finally got a CP done after he was a resident there for 4 months, there was no record of it anywhere when the "new" manager came on board and we needed to asses his new care needs due to declining health. Hawthorne Gardens management (Senior Lifestyles) has been putting new people in the ED position since December 2020. Now all they can manage are interim ED's from corporate. Staffing of caregivers is inconsistent in number of providers as well as HG staff often being supplemented by agency caregivers. This is extremely frustrating for the people who live at HG. My uncle had to argue with and educate CG's weekly on how to care for and apply his diabetic leg wraps. Many days they did not even put the wraps on, and many times they didn't take them off in the evening. All of this care was part of his care plan. The food is poorly prepared and often unhealthy. My uncle was served spoiled milk. The recent state review showed black mold growing in the kitchen along with numerous other problems. The cook has left. Not sure how things are currently. The most frustrating part of having a loved one here is that there is no direct access to ANYONE who can actually make change. The corporate staff who show up to "fix" things do their best to squash family members trying to advocate for their loved ones. They gaslight you saying, we're hiring so many new staff....and yet there are never enough staff and they are still hiring away. Find out what happens when you call the facilities management team. Is it local? Do you get a live person? State reviews here are terrible. Honestly, all facilities are struggling. Request a copy before you put your loved one in any AL or MC facility. Call your local ombudsman and find out if there are complaints. There are so many complaints at HG that they have their own dedicated ombudsman. Do your research. I wish I had. I trusted an acquaintance who works for a placement agency.

The food generally offered everyday is so-so. My father frequently complains about quality, lack of variety and amount . They do offer specially prepared fancy menus for holidays and monthly family brunches to show off to visiting family members. During normal times, residents may enjoy enjoy activities such as bingo, art activities, Wii bowling and planned outings. Management has changed multiple times over the part 5 years, turn-over of experienced leaders and caregivers is high which has lead to a decline in consistency & quality of staff and services unfortunately. An example of this is a lack of updated service plans for almost a year and no reply to email requests for follow up information. High cost is not worth what you are paying for assisted living in my opinion.

My mom lived at Hawthorne Gardens. It is beautiful and well-kept. The staff was wonderful, very kind, and worked very hard. The food was OK. They offer painting, walks, trivia games, memory games, parties for every holiday, music, barbeques, and blowing bubbles.

Hawthorne Gardens was a nice, well-appointed, clean place that looked very well run. The people who I talked to were very cordial.

The place I really liked was Hawthorne Gardens. It’s in a residential neighborhood in very old Portland. It’s got lots of walking ability, old homes around, grown-up trees, flowers, and things like that. It’s small; it only has 67 units. It is only assisted care and memory care. They are very close to the Hawthorne district, which has lots of little restaurants and has an old redone movie theater that’s quite popular in Portland. It’s right on the bus line, and the people are really nice. I just like it. Right now, not having any experience in staying there, it looked to me like a 5. It’s very clean and just been remodeled, so they’ve got all hardwood floors. They have garage parking, so if visitors come they can park there, and you can park your own vehicle if you have one. And the people are extremely nice. I have put a deposit down on it.

Hawthorne Gardens was a very nice, small, and quiet facility. The dining room was small but nice. They had a nice activity room for bingo and movies. It was very nice, just too small for my parents.

Hawthorne Gardens was beautiful. It was a newer facility. I would say that if we had the opportunity, we probably would have moved my mother there, but they didn't have any opening and they had no idea when they would have one. The downside was the common area, like the dining room was very small. The gathering area when you first go into the building was also extremely small. If there were a few people in there, it felt crowded. However, the rooms and the grounds were absolutely beautiful.
