My father went to Heartland after falling out of his bed at Wheeling Hospital and having his ankle bone dislocated. He was supposed to get physical therapy and go home. If your family member needs PT to return home, this is not the place to send them. Their PT department is useless. Also, if your parent is over 80, they basically make them wheel-chair bound. They do not want "elderly" patients up and walking around. My father walked into Heartland and within a six months, was in a wheel chair and never up walking again. They took an independent man, and because of his age, kept him down. Now as for the care by the doctor, nurses and aides, here was how it went. The doctor at Heartland NEVER touched my father; did not visit with him, NEVER examined him; he only came into the facility to read thru the charts so he could bill Medicare. ALL of his care was from the nursed and aides. I was at Heartland one to two times a day and spent at least 4 hours each day of the weekend and was very involved in his care. My father was outgoing and joked and talked to everyone. We made some good friends at Heartland, and I include the nurses and aides in that list. My father died at Heartland and the nurses were wonderful to my father and my family thru the last week when things got tuff. Heartland is good if you plan on being there on a consistent basis, asking questions and making sure your loved one is always a priority.
