I toured Brookdale Midland (MI). It's a small facility. The nursing director was very cordial, and the recruiting lady I talked to was very nice. They didn't have a room for my mom in assisted living. They wanted her in the memory care, and then they would move her over. And with my mom's dementia, I don't want her moving twice. So that kind of deterred me from going there. But that was one of the higher ones on my list. The rooms were small, but they seemed like a nice facility. The dining area was centrally located. They had music, bingo, crafts, storytelling, and dogs coming in.

We went to look at Brookdale Midland. I liked the setup of the room and shower. The staff members were friendly and were able to answer all our questions. The rooms were adequate. We talked to the people there, and they all agreed that the food was very, very good. The dining area was wide, open, well-lit, and clean. The facility was very welcoming and clean. It was not at all institution-like. It's more hotel-like.

My mom has moved into Brookdale Midland. We have chosen this one because when we walked in, it was peaceful, it was quiet, and there were not a lot of people moaning, groaning, and yelling. It was just a nice, quiet atmosphere. The staff is good. My mom likes the meals, and they're really good. Right now, they don't have her in any activities because she can't stand up.

Brookdale is wonderful. It's small, only about 15 residents on the assisted living side. Everyone knew me from the first day, and acted like my dad and I were old family friends from the start. Everyone is friendly.
My dad seems to be happy there and is thriving.

The staff at Brookdale Midland was very helpful and very caring. It was easy to find. It was outside the city a little bit. It's in a rural setting, it's heavily wooded in the back, and there are deer and turkeys that come out. They have an area where they have people sit out and watch those. My father was in one of the larger rooms and it was very well organized, had a nice view of the outside patio, was very convenient to the bathroom area, and it was at the end of the hall, but it was easy to go down to the library area and the eating area.

I felt that the rooms at Brookdale Midland were quite small. The entire place seemed to be darker and wasn’t as light and airy as the others. It was a lot smaller place. I was not really and terribly impressed. I didn’t get the feeling that the residents were that actively involved in the activities.

I put my father in Brookdale Midland. It’s satisfactory, clean, and nice. I had chicken wraps, iced tea, and a salad at our first lunch; they were excellent. We had meatloaf, baked potato, and vegetables one night for dinner. I wish they had more activities for them. He is high functioning and highly intelligent, and being around people that are advanced into their dementia and Alzheimer's, he really has nobody to relate to. I guess they’re doing the best they can do with the situation that he’s in.

Brookdale is truly a nice place. The regular staff is great, but they have a high turnover. My mother-in-law participates in activities, like trips and ball games, and they have people come in for singing, karaoke, and magic shows.

Our mother resided at the Sterling House of Midland for 36 days before she passed away. We chose Sterling House for her because it was clean and bright and well cared for inside and out. There is a lovely garden with seating as well as a patio with tables and chairs. They have a comfortable lobby with seating, where I often observed residents sitting and talking among themselves as well as engaging guests in conversation as they came in and out. Our mother thought the food was very good and she especially liked the coffee. She loved a good cup of hot coffee.
Of particular importance was the friendliness of the staff. Our mother often praised the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. When I visited I was also impressed with their caring and warm responsiveness to the residents.
She was allowed to bring much of her own furniture which helped with the transition to her new home.
Our mother did not participate in the activities, but I observed others in an exercise class, conversations about current topics and bingo.

Sterling House of Midland seemed to be a nice and clean facility. It had a homey feeling. It was close to my work and home. I liked that they were an assisted living facility and that my mom would be able to go down to the dining room to eat. The staff was nice and helpful. However, they do not take medicaid.
