I toured Waterford Estates for my father. It was exceptionally organized. They offered amenities that no place else offers. Like they had a storage room where you could store things like Christmas decorations you wanted to store. They had the storage bins for memory care as well. They had a special kind of shower tub. Whatever it was, it was excellent for dementia patients. They had dedicated staff and a dedicated location for them with their separate rooms. They take them on outings. It was just very organized. The material that they gave you was excellent. Everything was top-notch.
The dining area was excellent. I did not sample the food, but I did see the menus for the different times of the day. The residents get to select the food almost like at a restaurant. They get to select the menu that they want. They had a swimming pool, whirlpool, storage area, and rooms for different activities. They even have a top-notch physical therapy room. Even though people may come through like Medicare, they can provide you with therapy while you're in-house. They have a room with excellent equipment and therapists, so it's not like you get where somebody comes in with a bag of things. This is a room already set up with all of the same equipment that every place else has. The gentleman who took me on the tour was excellent. They also had an entertainment area where they have the audience seating and the stage. They are very well set up.
Joy
I looked at Waterford Estates Senior Living which seemed more clinical, more like a nursing home feel or a hospital feel. It didn't have that warm, cozy type of feeling. The staffs were very, professional, I didn't have any problem with them. I saw the rooms, it's an older building and not as modern as the other place I toured and wasn't as up to date. You could say it wasn't as impressive. It was just like, here's a room, and you're going to stay here. And that's it, it wasn't anything extra special. They had both private and shared rooms, but there wasn't anything about it that stood out. It wasn't great or special or wonderful or anything. It was a decent room, I'm not saying anything was wrong with the room. If you saw a picture of the room of this one and the other I toured, most people probably would lean to the other one because it was just very impressive. The lighting seemed kind of low, it didn't seem as bright and it was just kind of gloomy. There's a very big difference. I saw the dining area. It looked very nice, but I didn't get to taste the food. It's kind of small, but they only have a certain number of memory care residents, so it was the proper size for what they needed.
Everything was very clean inside and outside. The landscaping was very nice, they were working on the lawn and everything was very well kept. I saw the bathing area, the laundry area, the offices, the activity area, and pretty much everything. I was able to get a full tour of the entire facility. There's nothing wrong with this facility, it's just that the other one is head and shoulders above in comparison to them. It served its purpose but there was nothing exceptional about it. The staff was professional.

I visited Waterford Estates Senior Living. I thought it was very clean and very nice for memory care. It was very astute, like each one of the doors was a different color so the patient or the resident would recognize it. If they forgot where their room was, they knew that they would find the blue room, or find the green door. That was very astute. They had little alcoves for men to work on tools, they had alcoves for women to makeup or whatever, if they wanted to keep themselves busy.
The ratio for the nurses to them was very good. The food seemed very good. I was very happy with it, and the place was really good. They don't have a large capacity like some of them. They had, I can't remember exactly, like nine or ten rooms. It was a double room. So, if there was a female in one room, but she didn't have a bed partner, obviously it had to be another female. When I was looking, they didn't have room. When I come back, the male room had already been booked. It may be a little difficult to get in there, but it just depends. It's a hit and miss but I was very, very happy with it. The grounds were nice. The people were friendly. I would not hesitate at all.
A doctor doesn't come in; like in some places, a doctor comes in regularly to assess the patient. They don't have that capability, so they're limited to some aspects that the higher-priced ones are charging. But if you had a patient, that is normally memory care, not too far advanced, they would be fine. They're not as modern and renovated; they may be renovating. But it was very nice.

We toured Waterford Estates Senior Living Well, and I liked it. The monthly price is in our price range, but that's not the only cost. There's also a caregiver fee, so they charge that on top of rent. It looks like it's only $2500 a month, but it is like $700-$1500 more than that.
I think the facility is phenomenal, I would love for him to go there. They have laundry services. I'm assuming they have transportation services; we didn't go into that. The man that I met was super nice.
They have two dining areas. They have a little, resident-run, General store, and barbershop. They also have a meeting area where they show a movie every night. They have two different eating areas; one is on a floor where people require a little bit more help.
The facility was beautiful and didn't smell dirty. The apartments that we toured, one was the model apartment of course, and that was always made to look nice. But we also toured one that's available, and that one was super nice and clean.

I toured Waterford Estates Senior Living in Hazel Crest. The main area looked like a five-star hotel. However, the memory care area was down in the garden basement. It was dark. There weren't any windows in the common area. The room was adequate size, but it was old. I didn't like that their common area was smaller. Their activities for the residents involved baby dolls like what you see in a childcare center (because I worked a childcare center for a while). They had like toys and stuff. It probably worked for some of the residents, but I didn't care for that. Instead of that kind of atmosphere, they should have an extra person on board to do interaction with these people on an adult level.
I didn't really care for the fact that it was in the garden level basement. It was dark. It was three doors to get into. It was almost prison-like to me. I didn't care for it at all. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't work for me. It was my last choice out of the places. I only had interaction with the woman that was giving me the tour.

The price for care in this facility was very reasonable compared to other facilities. The rooms were beautiful with big picture windows. I did not like the main room as there were no windows. I was very impressed with the head nurse, and it seemed like they tried to tailor things to people's needs.

I visited this facility looking for a placement for my wife as I was interested in a memory care facility. As I met with the staff and discussed my wife’s needs they offered an option I had not considered. Waterford Estates has a section of assisted living which is secured at night, thereby providing the resident with additional access to more independent choices of activities but with the comfort of a more secure environment at night. This appealed to me as I continually hope my wife will be able to function more independently.
I did tour both the assisted living and the memory care sections and was impressed with both. The apartments and rooms and the common areas are clean and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and the residents seem to be involved.
After an evaluation, the Waterford Estates staff and I determined that my wife needed the full memory care. I was impressed with the staff to resident ratio and how many residents were involved in the activities each time I came. When we brought my wife into the memory care unit she was initially very resistant. However, I was called by the nurse several hours after I left and was told that my wife was much calmer, was starting to participate and even let one of the staff paint her nails.
The facility has 12 acres of land and because of local property taxes plus the fact that it is owned by a non-profit organization, the cost structure is significantly lower than other nearby areas. The memory care cost structure is a fixed rent plus a fixed care fee while the assisted living has additional variables.
I would highly recommend this facility.

Waterford Estates was more of like a nursing home and weren't really independent living. However, the place was very clean and smelled good. The lady that I talked to was very nice. She took me on a tour and she explained to me that they were more like a nursing and rehab facility. It was more for people with severe medical problems. The apartments were nice, but it was more on the line of a nursing home.
