I hate it here at Knollwood. It's very military-minded, which translates to the patriarchy, and I'm not used to that. They have a meeting with residents once a month, which is not very much, but it's rather interesting. They announced that in 2019, their focus is going to be on the residents. They have a lot of activities, and they take you to restaurants and museums. They also have movies in the building, as well as an art class. The emphasis is mostly physical here. They offer three meals a day. The line staff is wonderful.

4Garth Green Garth Green 6 minutes ago While the facility itself is nice and the accommodations acceptable, I have serious reservations about the quality of nursing and medical care my mother is receiving there. The nurses and nurse assistants do not have the basic competency to empty, clean, and reassemble an ileostomy bag. My mother has been there for over 2 weeks and no one has been able to perform this basic function. It is disappointing and sad to find my mother in soiled sheets due to the lack of skill among the staff. I wish we had sent her someplace else. The head nurse tells me everything is ok and getting better but it is not.

My mother is a retired army wife. She's moving into Knollwood Retirement community in three weeks. They have just been very helpful. The staff has been wonderful. The rooms are very spacious and clean. The food is wonderful, and the dining room is very large and open. They have a fitness room, bingo, and bridge. I like the different levels of service for different levels of need. I like the cleanliness of it. It's very wide open. It's not depressing at all.

Knollwood Military Retirement Residence has a lot to offer. It has different levels of care from independent, assisted, to skilled nursing, and another separate Alzheimer's unit. Everyone seemed very friendly and cooperative. I looked at both the independent and Alzheimer's apartments, and they were very nicely spacious. It's very clean and all the patients there seem to be involved in activity at the time of my visit. The food looked healthy and they serve three meals. You can either go down to the restaurant with a little snack bar, or you have the option to cook in your own place.

Knollwood is for high-ranking retired regular and reserve military officials. It's a very nice, prestigious facility that includes independent and assisted living"”and nursing home and memory care in a separate unit. It located in northwest DC, in a very beautiful campus"”secluded, with many trees and plants that give the place a private feeling. The assisted living part of the facility is gorgeous"”with beautiful wood furniture and classy appointments, along with very nice lighting. There is a day room with a TV area that people seem to use a lot. The rooms are of different sizes"”ranging from single rooms to suites, but even the older ones are a larger size. On the outside of all the doors to the living units, there is a picture and bio posted of the resident and where and when he or she served, which helps people get to know one another. There is a nice dining hall, which is more like a restaurant. There are lots of food options available every day. The menu choices are more upscale than you have at most facilities"”including different cuts of steak and a variety of fish. Residents also have the option of getting meals delivered directly to their rooms. The activities offered are diverse"”much geared to military, such as air shows, but including musical performances and outings to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. There are also lots of programs for the holidays"”such as a nice Easter program. On the assisted living side, residents can have private duty care, such as a one on one person there all the time, but residents must pay on their own for that. And in the nursing home part, even though it is small, with only about 30 beds, the care is coordinated, with one nurse available for each of the two sides, along with a charge nurse who follows up on orders and supervises the aides. There is plenty of staff and the quality of care is excellent.
