I did a tour of Colonial Court Assisted Living. They allow the memory care patients or residents to do some of the activities that the assisted living residents do. This is the first place that does that, and that was very encouraging for me. It's a family-owned place. They seem very involved. They have a very nice courtyard with high fences that he can walk around in. The whole place has locked doors. Even for the assisted living, they have locked doors. So, if he happens to wander into that area, he can't just walk out, which is nice. The rooms were very nice. They have bathrooms, and I think that's important.
It was a very nice room, low windows, so he can look out onto the courtyard. It was painted nicely. There was no smell in the whole place, that was the first thing I checked. They keep it very clean. The residents looked very happy. I got to look in some of the other residents' rooms that had people in them. They had decorated them very nicely and looked very homey and comfortable. In the bathrooms, the showers have just a small edge, but he'll be able to get in very easily, with lots of handles for safety.
I did not try the food, but I met the chefs. They have their privately trained chef who does all the meals. That was nice to see that they're not just warming up food. The nutrition is very important, and they have a nice change of menu. It's not the same thing over and over again. I got there right after lunch, so I wasn't able to see the food or anything. The biggest thing really was that when I walked in, people were engaged, and they were awake. They seemed very happy. I've been in a couple of places where people were just kind of sitting, staring into nowhere. That doesn't seem to be the case at all here.
The memory care dining area was nice. It's not nearly as nice as the assisted living dining area, but that's to be expected. It was nice and it was large enough. There are people in there to assist with the eating or just to help. Right now, my dad's spitting out a lot of his food, so they said that they help encourage and coach in that, so that's nice.
There's a barber shop and beauty shop, so he can get his hair cut there. There's a doctor that comes just for the residents there, which I love. My dad won't have to go to an appointment somewhere. That was a big thing for me. They also have a podiatrist, because that was a big issue for my dad. He just retired, but they are actively hunting for another podiatrist to come. But they did assure me that the nurses keep an eye, and will cut his nails and all that, which probably will ward off any issues that he'll have, so that was good.
I was very impressed with how clean it was, and how it smelled. They have a bird there, which my dad's going to love. A cockatiel that the residents can talk to and stuff. The bird is not in the cage. He stands on the cage, but he'll sing for people and stuff like that, that's a big plus. My son has a service animal, and he's welcome to come and bring the animal. We can bring my dad out -- like we live on a farm -- so we could come and get him, and bring him for his day at the farm, or a day of fishing, or anything like that; so, that's very nice. The marketing gal, she has two of her aunts there. That proves something to me, you wouldn't put your loved ones there if you didn't feel that it was a secure, safe place.
I met the nurses on call there, and I met the activity director, and he seems very nice. I didn't really meet a caregiver, but she assured me everybody's got their certifications up to snuff. I didn't particularly see anybody, but it didn't look like anyone was in need of anything. They may have been giving meds or something like that.

My mother-in-law lives in Colonial Court Assisted Living. The first thing that sold us on that place was the fire doors. They could be left open while all the other places we saw had to keep their doors shut and the resident's rooms. The staff has been very good and very attentive. Their COVID restrictions are very good. Everybody that comes into that place had to either have a negative COVID test or a vaccine card. (That's for all the visitors, the staff, and all the people that deliver stuff.) I like that. I can call her every morning to check and see how she's doing and they just let me do that. They are very understanding.
The facilities are very clean. It's very modern, looks homey, and doesn't look like a nursing home. It's just like a regular person's home. It's a little spendy, but for memory care, I think it's about right. They have an on-site doctor, so we do not have to take her out to see her primary. They also have a hospice, so when the time comes, we will not have to move her out of this facility to a hospice place (which is a great thing). Their grounds are all secured, and when the weather's nice, she could go out. They do something with the residents every day, too.
