We visited Brookdale Sussex, they were very nice. The people that took us on the tour and the administrative part of it were very, very good. The person who was supposed to give us the tour wasn't there, so one of the staff members did, and it was a confirmed appointment. But the facility was very clean and very nice. They just weren't quite what my mom was looking for. The people were very nice, the staff members were very nice, and things looked organized. We didn't try the food but we got the chance to speak with the chef. It was a small facility.

Brookdale Sussex was smaller than my father would like. It was close to home, which was good, but he might want something bigger and a little more social. The staff member wasn't there at the appointed time, but someone else took me around. Other than that, it was fine. I think they had less than 20 residents. I saw studios, and I think they had a bathroom in the room, but the showers were communal. I went after work. It was dinner time so I did not see anything going on in the activity room. It looked older than the other place.

Our experience with Brookdale Sussex was very positive. It looked like it was a really nice community atmosphere for the residents there. They were in the middle of an activity when I was there, and Jennifer was really nice on the tour. The rooms were accommodating. The staff was very friendly and outgoing. The dining area was very clean and very nicely laid out. It looked like everyone was very attentive to the needs of the residents. A guest musician was there and everyone was in the common room listening and singing with the guitar player.

I was hoping that Brookdale Sussex would be the one because it is a smaller community, and it is in a town where my dad had his office. It was very lovely on the outside but a little dark and low ceiling on the inside, and it kind of lacked vibrancy. The room was very small and dingy. The staff person told me that the carpet was going to be taken out and replaced, but I just felt the room was pretty small. All the staff people that I met were very friendly. It just seemed quiet. We were locked out on the patio, and the person who was with me didn’t have keys to get back in, so she knocked on both doors, and nobody came. And then, we walked around the building and there were a couple of employees smoking; that gave me a poor impression. And then all I could think of was what happens if my dad ever got locked out.

Brookdale Sussex seems to be an OK place. The rooms are fine but small and could be cleaner. Their dining area looks nice. They have an activities director that has different things for them to do, like playing games and watching TV, but my mother does not really join in the activities. They seem to treat my mother OK, which is the most important thing. However, the carpeting looks like it’s not vacuumed that often, but I’m not there every day, so I don’t know what goes on.

I was able to go to Sterling House of Sussex for a visit. I was just there for a short period of time, but the facility is clean. It seemed like they have activities that the residents can participate in. It seemed like the people who are in charge with the meals are really nice. I was able to see their rooms and they were pretty small. For the short time that I was there, I felt that the facility is pretty nice. The staff did well in accommodating me and they have been in correspondence with me since my visit.

Sterling House is smaller and intimate. We were visiting at a quiet time, so we didn't have much interaction with the residents. Right now, my mother is living with me so we're looking for a respite care.

We visited Sterling House of Sussex while in the region looking at assisted facilities for our uncle. We thought the exterior looked very well maintained.
The lawns and trees were nicely landscaped, with seating areas and walkways. The seniors could also safely navigate the outside area.
The staff was very accommodating. The facility had ample communal rooms for every activity imaginable, from reading in the library, to card games, physical exercise, ceramics and crafting and hosted meetings. We could see that anything the residents might need was provided.
The personal trainers are on hand to ensure safety while assisting the seniors in every way they can. The full service fitness center equipment was very nicely maintained, with regular exercise classes.
The dining room featured food that looked and smelled delicious. The menus all had healthy food options for all kinds of diets. Healthy snacks are offered whenever residents request them and on a regular schedule.
The outside excursions included many interesting cultural events in the area -- which hosted regular music, theater, film and art gatherings regularly.
This facility can accommodate a variety of ambulation levels that can be shifted as it becomes necessary.
The private living spaces were beautifully decorated with lots of fresh air and light. All units were very well designed and efficient.
This is a service oriented living environment for seniors including everything they need. We were impressed with how kind, caring and helpful they were to the residents.
