My mom fell, broke her hip, and went to rehab at Heartwood. It was clean and had friendly, professional staff. My mom never had any complaints about it. She is very picky, but most of the time the food was good. There were always three or four choices for the main entrée, like at dinnertime, you could have a salad or vegetable or both, so there were choices. I wouldn’t mind being there myself when the time came. The staff might have been overworked or something because we'd ask for help and it might take them awhile to get there. But on average, they’d be there in a couple of minutes.

My friend ended up at Heartwood Extended Healthcare. It was so different from assisted living because so many couldn’t walk. But they did have activities scheduled for everyday, and those who could can partiipate did. The people were very professional, and it did appear that there were more of them. They didn’t have telephones or TVs in the room, and you have to pay additional for those items. You have to provide your own TV and then pay $20 a month. They had landlines, but you still pay $20 more a month for that also, but that is not on the website. However, Heartwood was warmer feeling that the other facility. They were much better than the other facility. They had good therapy. I was pleased with the food, but again, she got food that she should not have been given. But I would say their social worker was so much better than the one at the other facility. She took at least an hour to explain everything, and she was extremely professional with that.

My friend had fallen, and she was in the hospital for like 15 days. I was looking for a place to put her, and they recommended Heartwood. They said they were already able to place three people over there, and they all seemed very happy. Heartwood is a house care facility, and they have a memory program there also. They talk about memory loss, and she participates in all that kind of stuff. She also participates in the games, and she has made a lot of friends. It is a single story place, and they have good meals and good therapy. They have exercises and games. It is a good place, but it is a little on the pricey side. The service is really great, and as long as the people are happy, there is nothing else you can say.

Still a Caregiver in my Heart
December 22, 2012
We found staff friendly, caring, loving, professional and skilled. If I ever have to go into a nursing home, I'd want Heartwood to be considered. For two years (2010 to early 2012) Heartwood was the home to my sister's father-in-law, a WWII vet who was my best buddy. My sister had cared for him in her home for about a decade, until he required 24-hour care. A few years earlier (after significant research), Heartwood became my mom's home for two years, following rehab for a major stroke that left her needing 24-hour care. A decade earlier, my brother-in-law's mother stayed at Heartwood. No place is ever perfect. (We visited many and tried a few other facilities. We learned that we, as patient advocates, always need to speak up, periodically, to drive progress or change, no matter the facility.) When we (my sister or I) spoke up at Heartwood, they listened, made changes, and improved, when needed. They were proactive, too, kept us informed, and worked at keeping our loved ones engaged and moving around. Heartwood is still independently owned (which is rare, nowadays), with an owner on-site frequently. Staff (from charge nurses, aids and rehab pros, to the activities team, administrators, laundry and maintenance providers) were genuinely friendly and helpful. At Heartwood, I visited my WWII buddy monthly to weekly (with my sister and her husband visiting during the week). Earlier, with my mother, I visited several days a week to daily, hours at a time, all hours of the day and night (with sis visiting weekly). Heartwood was there for us, working with us to keep our loved ones as healthy as possible, in good humor with twinkles in their eyes, for as long as possible. Then they helped as we said our last good byes. While no family resides there any more, my sister and I, independently, enjoy dropping by Heartwood to share hugs with staff who genuinely loved our loved ones.
