I have lived in independent living at Covenant Shores since 1995. During that time my husband had to be in the Health Center for 2 1/2 years. He received excellent care. Now the Health Center is again in excellent shape having gone through some problems in the recent past.
The activities director in the Reflections department now is helping each individual express interests. Music, art, social outreach, memory support are there.
I can whole heartedly recommend Covenant Shores as a CCRC (Community Care Center) where the leaders truly care for each resident.

The memory care unit "Reflections" is a disheartening place. It's a system based on the belief that people with dementia should be locked away and left to watch the same station on t.v. day in a day out. Some of the staff are excellent, but the rest are either sarcastic or disinterested, and seemingly just there to collect a paycheck. Buyer beware.

Covenant Shores Health Center is NO place for Mom! Despite the prestigious zip code, the picturesque setting on Lake Washington, and the slick, touchy-feely marketing, the Health Center is just a nursing home -- a nursing home that charges twice the going rate for lackluster care and cramped rooms. They charge extra for every little service, they have no in-house handicap van service for getting disabled residents to outside medical appointments, and parking there can be a hassle. In 2016, dental hygiene there was so alarmingly substandard, that long-term impacted food cost our mother two teeth, a bridge, and the ability to chew food properly for life. Even though we got Mom out of there to a better care facility (for half the money), the dental neglect she suffered at Covenant Shores HC precipitated a miserable decline. And, despite the best efforts at her new place, she died five months later. We have filed a complaint to the Washington State Dept. of Health and are considering legal remedy.

Each year this facility increases their rates 2-3 times CPI. The repetitive response is their wages need to be raised to be competitive and have a stable staff. Each year the staff continues to turn over rapidly, often indicative of management not just wages. Their Director of Nursing staff in Assisted Living (AL) has changed 3 times in the last 2 years, and the current one is now leaving. The Director of Health Care Services is open with 2 interim people since the opening occurred. The state has issued a number of citations to Covenant Shores, they had to bring in a 'turn-around specialist' because of so many regulatory issues not being followed. The food in AL is mediocre at best. The glitz and glamour, waterfront facility can distract new residents of the real services that are delivered.

My mother was in rehab care at Covenant Shores in Mercer Island. It was a very nice, very well-kept, and very friendly community. The rooms were not large, but were pleasant, and they had a garden where the patients can go to. The rooms were situated around a large living area, which had a big screen TV that patients can watch as well as the one in their rooms. They played cards in each other's rooms once in a while. It's got a nice view of Lake Washington, the staff was very friendly, and they have nice facilities. I didn't go in any of their assisted living apartments -- just the rehab care center -- but from the outside, it was very nice. You can take the patients in their wheelchair down to the dock where the lake is.

The organization provides good care and services, but from our experience, they charge extra for virtually every little item a resident needs....move a towel rack, fix a light, adjust a shelf, all these requests from their elderly residents generate additional bills to the resident, who is already paying handsomely for their apartment.
The management is slow or delays any of the contractual obligations for renovations the resident is entitled to receive on certain anniversaries. Lots of excuses!
The sales line is all glamor and glitter, but for the follow through have plenty of patience as they wear you down. The rules favor the organization, NOT the resident, especially the monetary side!

The reason I wouldn't go to Covenant Shores was that they charged over $5,000 if you needed nursing assistance. It was almost $5,500 a month, and I couldn't afford that. In the independent living, you buy your little apartment, and then you pay extra number of dollars for all of the facilities, usage, and diner every night. I was looking at a one-bedroom apartment with a fully built-in kitchen. I liked that it was close to Seattle, and I was not afraid of traffic. It was also close to the city where I live right now. They had almost every activity you want. They had a wood shop and a boat dock. They had a nursing facility on site -- almost a mini-hospital. They had their own bus that would take you shopping. It was a beautiful with lots of trees and green lawns with big walks. It was very nice. The food was excellent. Everybody was encouraged to exercise and eat right. Everybody was in good health.

Covenant shore is right on the water and a lot of our church people are there. It's a nice place, the staff is excellent but we are not ready yet though. The food is a lot better there than we have here. You have to go outside to go eat and that would be the only negative thing.
