Mother has been at Summerwood Alzheimer's Special Care Center for a month now. It is a very caring place, and they are keeping her busy as much as they can. It is clean, it smells nice, and it's not an institutional type looking place. It has a homey feel, and it is a nice place. Her room is nice, large, furnished with pictures on the wall, with nice big windows, and the bathroom is in the room. They have movie time, different exercise times and activities, ice cream socials, field trips, puzzles and games, entertainment, and piano players that come in.

I visited Summerwood Alzheimer's Special Care Center two years ago when my family was considering admitting my grandmother to the center. She had frontotemporal dementia, and Summerwood said on a radio advertisement that they specialized in all types of Alzheimer's and Dementia. We enjoyed visiting the facility and were impressed by the staff and amenities. It was clean, encouraged good feelings, and not degrading, as some senior care facilities can be. Many of the staff were nursing students that were in school at nearby Big Bend Community College and they were very knowledgable (I actually know 2 girls who worked there at the time and they are outstanding young women). The only negative aspect that the center had concerned the attitudes and social aggressiveness of the residents; however, this cannot be blamed on Summerwood's staff because Alzheimer's and dementia patients are often aggressive. Overall, we were very impressed with this facility, but we did not admit my grandmother because we decided as a family that we were not ready to let her leave home.
