My mother passed away from Alzheimer's last October. Highland staff were so amazing. Mom dodn't want to be there, where ever there was. The staff cared for her, looked after her, cherished her in all her stubborn ways. They were wonderful. After she passed, we couldn't find a knitted blankie she was using, that was her granddaughter's favorite blankie. Almost a year later, I received a package in the mail. It was the missing blanket- this shows the caring character of the staff at this facility. Bless them

Overall I think it was a good facility, the staff seemed to be knowlegable of the residents. The staff was helpful when asked questions by the nursing students. The amenities were in an older building, some of the resident rooms were too small for two people. It made it difficult to move around, and there was limited space for personal items. The dining hall was a bit cramped. Many of the residents to to the dining hall in wheelchairs, so it was hard for too many wheelchairs to move in and around the dining hall during peak dining times. There is only one shower room, making it sometimes difficult to move a resident in a wheel chair at times. There was limited space for clothing and personal items when showering. Over all the facility was welcoming and friendly, and I would recommend it to friends or family. I would also recommend everyone visit a local facility to see the conditions, good or bad. So to have an understanding of this type of living situation. Thank you.

My mom was in Highland for 47 days, that was the most stressful nightmare I have ever been through. She entered that facility with her skin intact, she died with several painful wounds on her. My mom had a sudden end stage cancer diagnosis. Her cancer pain was under control, her skin wounds caused her horrible pain. Her mouth was full of thrush from a dose of antibiotics given for a misdiagnosed urinary tract infection. Her nurse at Highland mistook the thrush for cottage cheese left in her mouth EVEN after her night shift nurse charted that my mother had thrush and they should order meds for it. I just did not think it would be that way, so upsetting or horrible, so unorganized, it was as if these people did not have report, the left hand never seemed to know what the right hand was doing. A nurses aid came in to toilet my mom....my mom had a catheter. She didn't know! My mom had horrible thrush, they sent her sloppy jo's for lunch.....kitchen didn't know. Hospice ordered expectorant for my mom's cough that she got from her room mate, nurse gave her NONE, said it never worked for her, she gave her morphine instead, three times the amount in her CADD pump, she slept like a baby............and her lungs filled and she died the next day. She should have been moved from her room as soon as her room mate got that cold, she received IV antibiotics for it...my mom got morphine. I would never recommend this facility and have little faith in any others now.
