POA Caregiver

They never have enough staff working to properly care for the patients. They forgot to bathe my Mother for over 2 weeks straight right after returning from surgery. I had 5 HIPPA violations where they gave a person on their housekeeping staff my Mothers bills, appointments for care meetings, HIPPA compliant medical records release forms, all of which contained her private personal information, which is protected by law. They violated multiple doctors orders, the food is terrible, wouldn’t feed it to my dog. I had to drive 70 miles a day, round trip, for 2 weeks straight because they would not rotate the icepacks after her surgery every 4 hours, even though I had a doctor’s order on file. They misdiagnosed my mother with a UTI that she didn’t have, because their nurse on duty violated their own PCP’s order to do a catheterized clean urine catch, instead she allowed her to urinate in a catch pan instead, which contaminated the specimen, resulting in the misdiagnosis. They injected an antibiotic that was in the wrong spectrum to treat the real medical issue of cellulitis, which delayed beginning the correct medication she needed to treat her condition. We had to wait on the wrong antibiotic to get out of her system before we could start the correct one. Her magnesium level was so low that she was having missed and irregular heartbeats, which kept the heart alarm going off the entire night while she had to endure 2-4 hour magnesium infusions to get her heart rate corrected, adding on to the issue she already has of a heart murmur, which Friendship Health and Rehab totally missed and the hospital thankfully found. Their misdiagnosis could have resulted in her death had I not stepped in and demanded her transport to the hospital, after their PCP refused transport to the hospital. I had to enforce my POA paperwork to force them to get transportation to the hospital. The doctor there said she probably wouldn’t have lived another week if I had left her there with them continuing the wrong treatment and she would have continued to deteriorate quickly because of her age and real medical issues that they were not treating her for. I have witnessed patients go over 12 hours without being changed. Patients who could not feed themselves go until 7:30pm to get their cold dinner that arrived over an hour earlier than when they were fed. I had to bring in my own bleach wipes to keep her eating tray clean, spider webs in her room, trash in the floor that laid for days until I threw it away, since it was obvious they never were going to. After 2 1/2 years of pure he** of dealing with them I brought my Mother home. The stress of dealing with them started to take a toll on my health, and they never did a UAI, as required by the state, on my Mother in the 2 1/2 years she was a resident there. I believe they did that deliberately to prevent her from being able to be moved to another facility.

I went to visit my friend's aunt. It was very nice place, especially for the elders. It didn't look like a nursing home; it was more of house town. The elders had their swimming pool and gardens and parks. They have field to play golf and other activities. The nurses who worked there were very nice and friendly. The elders who can walk and assist themselves have a place to hang out and activities to do. And the once who needed assistance are very well taken care of by the LPS and CNS who worked there. The nursing house were very clean and neat for the residences making it a very comfortable place to live in. The rooms they had were very big and it felt like home. I wouldn't choose any other place than Friendship Retirement Community for anyone who lives around Roanoke. I asked my friend's aunt how it was living there and she said she loves the nurses and the place. She said she was very taken care of as if it was her house. Of course her family pay good for the nursing home too.

Throughout the numerous times in which I visited this facility, I always noticed the friendliness of the staff immediately on every visit. The staff were also easily accessible when needed, there was no need to search for them like I have seen in other assisted living facilities. The grounds and buildings are kept neat and clean and have a nice overall appearance. There is a spa and exercise room on site which are fairly large compared to most similar facilities. The only negative about the community is the parking situation. There are numerous buildings on site, but none of the buildings have enough convenient parking for either residents or visitors. Every time I have visited the community I have had to park a considerable distance away from the building, but this is the only real negative about the facility that I noticed.
