The Masonic Home of Virginia (MAHOVA) a private facility. Originally established in the late 1800s as an orphanage for children of Masons; in the 1950s it transitioned into an adult home, and today it is a continuing care community ranging from independent living cottages to various levels of assisted living and memory care.
It is clear from some of the reviews that individuals do not understand the mission of the Home and it's rich history of caring for the Masonic community. I have several family members and friends who are/were residents of the Home, and the level of care is excellent.

I visited this facility and I was told that they only accept Masons and their wives. The person I spoke to was snobbish.

I knew some people at Masonic Home of Virginia, as well as being familiar with the place, so therefore we decided that this would be the place that we would choose for my husband. The staff are very good. I have eaten there a number of times, and the food is good. Their room is spacious enough for everybody. Their rooms are very good. It's a little bit larger than most places. They have a whole bunch of activities, like they have bingo and crafts. They also go on to tours. Actually, they have 25 different activities a week.

I was looking for a place for my aunt so I visited Masonic Home of Virginia. The place was really nice, clean, and had no odor to it, but it was too expensive. It was about $7000 for one month, excluding the services they give you. The employees were snobbish too. They need to work on their manners. I wouldn't recommend this facility.

In the times I have visited my grandmother at The Masonic Home, I have left with the impression that the facility is a nice enough place for her to be living for the rest of her life. The staff there are very friendly and seem to really like my grandmother, but since she has Alzheimer's, she doesn't always remember them until they remind her several times of their past experiences with her. She's always very friendly to them though, and she seems to enjoy the activities that they put on there. Sometimes she does seem a little bored, but I think it's because she sometimes has a negative attitude and doesn't want to participate in the activities there. As far as the facility itself, the rooms seem very nice and the common areas always look clean and well-maintained. In particular, the grounds of The Masonic Home are beautiful and well-groomed, and it gives the entire place a very nice feel.
