I took my sister over to Commonwealth Senior Living at Gloucester House. She just got a chance to look at the outside of the facility. She is aware of where it is, and she got the chance to see the outside of the facility. I spoke with the coordinator personally. I got a chance to have a little chit chat with pretty much everybody in the facility, although it was on a Zoom. We had a Zoom meeting and hooked up that way. The outside was very nice. Very elegant. It was not a scary-looking building. The landscaping and all of that was wonderful. It was very clean with a nice, modern appearance. I was pleased with that. It was very well maintained. I spoke with one of the placement coordinators. She had me on the phone, and we did a Zoom conference. As she walked around the facility, inside and outside, she gave me an opportunity to see inside, what it was like, e.g., the rooms, and who was in charge of what. I met some of the staff. It gave me a really good idea of what the facility offered. I was actually very pleased with that, but I'm not the one who's going to be living there. When I brought my sister so she could see it again, we needed to have special permission to go in. We just kinda went there on a whim. She only got a chance to see the facility this time from the outside. She is familiar with the facility, although she has not been in it yet for herself. They have activities. From what I'm understanding, very slowly, they're able to relax some of their restrictions depending on the visitations. They are allowing some visitations with one person during a certain timeframe. They still have to maintain social distancing, and they still have to maintain masks with no contact, but at least they get to be in the same room this time.

Commonwealth Senior Living is very nice. There seemed to be a lot of activities. The rooms are normal with a small kitchen area. The staff treated me very well. I was invited for lunch, and the food was very tasty and well-presented.

We visited friends at Gloucester House and brought them requested items/goodies, and fixed their equipment when they needed it. The nurses were dedicated and friendly, and very patient with some very trying residents. We needed to store ice cream and other goodies in the nurses station sometimes and everyone was very good about leaving it for our friends. The nursing home is always clean and well maintained. The food served to our friends looked and smelled quite appetizing. They frequently have fun activities for the residents and there are special events for the holidays too. Seems like a great place. If anyone we know needs their sort of care, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. The only caveat is that - at the time, they may have fixed this - they needed to get their internet upgraded to current standard limits. We couldn't even get our friends' computer's virus definitions to download. Regular internet surfing was out the question. Aside from that, its a great place!.

Gloucester House is very clean; it has no odor. The staff is fairly knowledgeable about what my mom needs. The weekday help was pretty good; however, the weekend help was not very knowledgeable about what’s going on with her. They keep her clean. The lady I spoke with the first time was very helpful in mom’s financial issues. It was like a home away from home.

We had a very bad experience at Gloucester House. Half of my dad's clothes were stolen, and he came home with bright red genitals and t-shirts with urine on them, so he wasn't changed every two hours. In two weeks, I only washed two pairs of socks, so he wasn't getting two showers a week and bed baths every day. On Sunday, they took them to the hospital without calling me, where he coughed up blood. The community was clean, and food service was good.

My mother-in-law has been in Gloucester House for about a month now. We like the room very much. It is assisted living, and they also have a memory care unit. The staff is very accommodating, and any time we have a problem, they're always available to help. She was playing bingo just the other day, and of course they have church a couple of days. They have social times, and she has had little manicures. They had a root beer float in their very nice dining room. I tried the food there, and it is good.

This is a long overdue letter of thanks to Gloucester House for the care of my mother. I truly believe we could not have found a better place for her to finish out her years on earth than in the Sweet Memories Unit at GH. Hindsight is 20/20 and we can see how it all fell into place. We (my sister and I) feel we were "lead" to GH. It all started back in 2003. My husband and I purchased a home in Hayes. We physically moved in 2004. At the time, my mother and sister shared a residence in northern Virginia. As we got out into the community of Gloucester, people would inquire as to why we chose Gloucester as our retirement home. I always answered, "I don't know. It just happened." A friend of mine told me that there had to be a reason so I started looking for the reason. It took several years before I realized why we were here. In 2009 my sister became engaged and married. It was her first marriage at the age of 66! She called me and asked if I could find a home for mother who had been diagnosed w/Alzheimer's for years and was 96 years old. I did not know where to turn. I picked up a copy of Senior Living and found that GH offered care for Alzheimer patients. We came to GH and we were totally impressed w/the facility. GH was like a home, not an institution. There were no elevators to deal with. The staff speaks English which was not true in northern Virginia. We met you and we were so impressed. It was such an easy transition from mother's previous living arrangement to GH. My mother was very happy at GH and we enjoyed visiting her there. Her happiness and comfort meant everything to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The people of Gloucester House were really helpful. We had a lot of difficulties and we were getting worried that we would not be able to get my dad into Gloucester House because they can’t take him in without all this paperwork. They worked with the doctor to get the paperwork all done and took that load off of my shoulders, which was really helpful. As far as the cost of being in assisted living, it is quite high, and they worked with us on this and how to make it more manageable. He has a room with a walk-in closet, a refrigerator, and a private bathroom, and then we put all his own furniture in there except for the hospital bed that he is using. I haven’t tried the food; it looks really good, but my father hates the food, and I think it is because it is more of healthy food and he likes to eat a lot of junky stuff. They play Bingo, they have movies and manicure day, they play cards and board games, and once a week they offer trips to Walmart or out to lunch at a local restaurant. They do a lot. They have church services, people coming in and sing, and people come in with dogs.

When I first took my mother at Gloucester House, we were happy with it because it didn't smell bad and it was clean. Everybody that was there seemed to be very enthusiastic about their work and seemed to be happy. But since my mother was there, the staff had changed quite a few times and that was kind of upsetting to me. We were really concerned about why things were changing around so much, but things seemed to have stable. The facility is very expensive. She got a private room and it's very nice.

My mother ( 88 ), has been there for 1 month and likes it. She is in the Assisted Living side. She is lucky enough to be mobile and able to move around without help. She said the food is very good with many choices. The staff is friendly and helpful. The facility appears clean and not crowded. I will post more as her stay progresses.
