I liked the whole facility of Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal. It seemed to be clean, very caring and had a lot of activities for the seniors. The rooms were nice and the dining facility was great. The apartment had a kitchenette, which was great, because at least you can make a cup of coffee or tea whenever you wanted to, instead of going down to the dining room or the snack area. There's a refrigerator also so you could keep snacks and stuff like ice cream. The lady I talked to was very informative. She delved into what our situation was and she was very helpful and very caring. I liked her presentation. We saw a sample menu along with the current menu for that day and they had options that were always available.

Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal was excellent. The place was clean. I had seen a nurse on duty. I talked to a lady there and she was very nice. She was new, but she was very informed. She knew the names of the people who work there, she took me on all the floors, and she showed me the room that my sister would have got to go to if they would have taken her there. She took me through the whole thing. They have programs, and they have a library. There was just so much stuff there. They even let them go out on day trips supervised. The lady knew what she was talking about. She was very informative. She took us to places that we didn't even ask to go to. We went to the memory care floor. We didn't have to go there, but she did. She showed us the outside, the dining room, where they do crafts, where they play cards, and where they play bingo. We've seen it all. She said everything was made fresh and homecooked.

My husband went to Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal. We chose them because the price was good, the services rendered and also the meals. It's an assisted living place. What I liked best is I feel that my husband is very safe and they check on him at least every two hours. He enjoys the staff and they treat him very nice. The food is usually really good, but there are times when the quality is just not up to snuff. They have many activities. They've modernized. It's very nice, and the upkeep is good.

My mother-in-law has been at Commonwealth for six months. She loves it. She has a roomy studio unit in the new wing. It is light and cheery. She has made friends. She is as busy or as unbusy as she wants to be on any given day. Lots of fun and varied activities. The staff is wonderful, very friendly and helpful. She is quite content and feels at home.

I moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal. It's a very good experience, and I like it very much. It is brand new. It is the latest in innovation. It has a wonderful big bathroom, big shower, and walk-in shower; I have a one-bedroom place. I have a kitchen in the front corner of the big room with a refrigerator, a sink, and my own coffee pot and toaster. We have so many activities that one person can't do everything. It's very nice here. Everyone is so helpful. We have a library, a beauty salon, and several workout rooms. I haven't been here very long, so I'm not real knowledgeable about what is all here. I've just been here for a month. I haven't been out as much as I will be later. I'm starting to get out some because I'm getting more settled in my room.

I went to Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal. The apartment was smaller than the other place I went to, but it was more expensive. They offer bingo, crafts, and other stuff similar to other facilities. The staff was very nice. I saw the dining hall and it seemed nice. I also talked to the directors.

We've been happy with Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal. It's a very nice place. The food is excellent and the staff has been caring, so we don't have any complaints. They have activities and I saw their calendar. I have seen an area where they have people putting together puzzles or reading in the library area on the main floor. They also have snacks all day that the people could have go to when they're out. People can go to a special room, like a family room area for people who want to visit there.

Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal was more affordable to me. It was lovely. In the apartments, they have a memory place too. The only thing that bothered me was the elevator. I would recommend them though. It was wonderful. They have snack trays where residents can get things during the day if they need a snack. I tried something from there, and it was very good.

We really liked Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal, but it was a bit pricier than other places and it had no availability. The overall feel was very nice. They had their own locally sourced food, and that was a high plus for us. They even own some of the farms that they get their food from. It was a really nice place. If they had availability and if they weren't quite so pricey, they would've been really higher on our list. I didn't get to eat the food, but it looked good, and the menu selection was good. The staff was very helpful. It was a really nice building.

Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal was beautiful, but I wouldn't ask my husband to stay there. The person was very pushy; I was not impressed. For activities, they were tossing a ball back and forth and that was it. I checked everything, but I didn't bother going into the kitchen because at that point, I had already made up my mind.

My father has already been placed at Commonwealth of Front Royal (Commonwealth Assisted Living at Front Royal). He has only been there for a couple of days. They were the only people that had memory care here. That’s where he went. The staff was friendly. The nurse was very informative. The place appeared to be very clean and taken care of. I think there are probably 20 to 30 residents in the memory care. They seem to care for all of their residents. They have a library, activities room, and decorations.

So far our experience with Commonwealth has been excellent. The staff is very loving, caring, and they treat everybody like family. They’re very attentive, always sharing with us the things that they see; and what we see, we share them together. My mother-in-law’s room is nice, and large-sized with a nice large bathroom. It’s very clean, very quiet, and the food is really good. They have a nice chef that cooks very well.

I placed my father in Commonwealth. It is a better facility than all the other ones I visited. I think the staff is very educated and treated the family members well. The place is very clean; they do a great job.

My husband was a past resident of Commonwealth. He was there from July 1st through October 9th. It's a clean facility, a very nice building, and furnished very nicely. They had construction going on at the time, but they kept it as clean as they could considering that. It had some really good people that really care and take their job seriously, but there were people who don't. They were not trained to work with people who have memory problems, specifically Alzheimer's people. Everything went fine until my husband's Alzheimer's characteristics started kicking in, and that's when they demanded that I hire somebody to go in there. They kicked him out twice because of his belligerent behavior. I was paying them to do a job, they couldn't do it, and they were demanding that I help them when I was paying them to do that job. They care more about aesthetics of the building than they do about their residents.

I lost my husband Al on February 25, 2013. We were married for 62 years. Our future was unsure but we were in it till the end. Al’s motto of Que Sera Sera, and mine of Let it Be saw us through many trials and blessings. Now I have to live a different life. I was terrified of being “ALONE.” But I am happy to say I am far from alone. The staff are so loving and caring. I’ve made many new friends and I feel safe, loved and cared for. I must say there is not a grouch in the house! Welcome Home is a perfect and true expression of my new home. As for my one point of contention it is the food. But I feel they try to serve healthy food. And no one will like or eat all the food all the time. You cannot please everyone. Que Sera Sera, Let it Be!

They are more than staff, they are family. The care of the nursing and administrative staff, both to the residents and to the residents’ families, was outstanding. The staff truly cared about the residents, both physically and emotionally. The residents’ families were kept timely informed and included as much as possible in every aspect of the daily lives and well-being of the residents. The staff treated the residents and the family of the residents like the staff’s own family.

My mother was very happy with all aspects of her care till the facility was purchased by another company. Then the quality of care went south. The new management decided to transport all residents to the downstairs dining room for lunch and dinner with the independent living residents. My mother was happy to go to the dining room that was close to her apartment, which was the one providing meals for the nursing home and assisted living residents. Under the new rules, all residents had to go to the independent living dining room in the basement, via the one elevagtor in the building. This procedure meant that two times a day, all available staff had to gather the nursing home residents and assisted living residents, line them up in the hallway, make their way to the downstairs dining room, then transport them back to their rooms. The staff was running themselvews ragged, making several trips gathering residents, then transporting them back to their rooms. My mother was so traumatized by this process that we had to eventually pay for tray service for her meals to be delivered to her room. We eventually moved mother to a different facility where she was treated like a person and not as a statistic in a so-called business decision. My stars all go to the staff (I would give all 5 stars) for their dedication and service to the residents.

Located in a safe, charming neighborhood, The Southerlands has many activities and has a very strong community outreach program. A wonderful perk to this community is the levels of care The Southerlands provides from independent elderly care to assisted living, and full-care nursing home. Also, located very close to the town hospital, this is an extremely safe environment if immediate care is needed. In addition, the town of Front Royal is located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley which is a perfect atmosphere for anyone who loves trees, rivers & fresh mountain air. Many historic landmarks also endow the town of Front Royal as a major Civil War landmark, and is a great place to rediscover our nation's past with many small days trips & activities. The Southerlands prides its establishment with keeping your loved ones active with a small but clean fitness center, a studio with Yoga & Tai Chi classes available, and even many golf courses nearby! The rooms are standard, nothing extraordinary, but comfortable, clean & well thought out. All in all, if you're looking for a safe, social, active environment for your loved one, The Southerlands is well worth checking in to.
