We toured Shelby Gardens Place, and it was beautiful. Their price was just a little bit too expensive. It was a beautiful facility. You could tell that it was well-maintained. The staff was very caring. It had beautiful surroundings and always something going on that I could see. Even the staff in the hallways greeted me and said hello to me. They really seem concerned as well of what my friend likes and does not like. The rooms were a little bit smaller, but they were adequate for a private room. They were studio rooms, but they were all well-maintained. The carpet was nice. I couldn't say anything bad about them. I looked at the dining area and it was beautiful. It was very well furnished and there's adequate room. I was impressed that they had crafts, a game room, and a beauty parlor onsite. They also had onsite physical therapy, which was very impressive to me. They had the physical therapist come right into their facility and work with people.

Moved out of this facility because the rent keeps rising but the building keeps declining. The staffing is a constant issue, the food is not that great, and the best part was the activities director and the activities, but she left.

I was not impressed with Shelby Gardens Place, it was not well kept up. There were residents just sort of lingering in the hallways in their wheelchairs, and it reminded me more of a nursing home than assisted living. What I liked least was their deceptive pricing. It looked on one end like it was one of the most affordable places, but when we sat down, it became clear that it was going to be much more expensive. Their add-ons for moving in were excessive, and their add-ons for levels of care were $600 for each level. They told us that once they evaluated my mother, the average would be about $1500 for extra care.

Mom has been at Shelby Gardens Place for one year now. They have a full calendar of events from bingo to manicures, outings, entertainment, and church services. They have an activities room where they do painting, crafts, and cooking. I find the staff to be caring and attentive, but sometimes, they are short-staffed. Mom enjoys living here, and she has been treated well, for the most part. They have a variety of food to choose from. For the residents who are not able to choose the food, the family or a relative would have to choose the menu for the week or the month. But they didn't tell me that before. I happen to find out that my mom has difficulty choosing the food that she wants. So, I had to go there and plan her meal schedule for her. They have a large staff turnover and I think they could do a refresh and modernization of the facility, especially since they increased their rate by 10% without any tangible increase in the services that the residents get.

My mother is in Shelby Gardens Place. It's a nice and clean place, and she likes it. It's convenient to where I'm living. It's almost around the corner from me. The staff is good. I've called several times and asked them to do things for my mom, and they took care of it. I'm also able to go over there and talk to them; overall, we have a great relationship. She said the food is good. They have lots of activities, but my mother chooses not to participate. She has a hotel refrigerator freezer, a microwave, and a kitchen sink or an area if you want to cook something (which you really don't have to because you're provided three meals a day). They have an outdoors in the front and a patio in the back. Sometimes they'll have activities at the back.

My mother has moved into Shelby Gardens Place. It's an older facility, but it is very nice and well kept. It's not rundown; it's very well maintained. They have three levels of rooms, a studio, a midlevel and a one-bedroom. The menu looked very good; there's a wide variety. I met all of the staff and they were exceptional. They have a wide variety of activities. They have an activities director on staff. It's shockingly expensive now, but I've checked on other facilities and they're right in line. They're not charging any more or any less than anywhere else. The residents seemed very engaged, seemed happy and they're talkative. All I can do is hope that my mother will enjoy it here.

I went to see Shelby Gardens Place assisted living. I enjoyed the tour that they gave me. It was very informative and factual. The place was very clean and very quiet. The staff that showed us the facility was very helpful in explaining some of the details. It looks like it's a very nice place to have things for the residents to do. The room is really small, but I think that's pretty normal. Overall, it was a good tour.
I toured their assisted living. It was a studio room that we saw and it's the smallest room I've ever looked at. I also got to see the actual room that is available for my brother to move into. I saw a model room but she also showed me the actual room if he were to try to get in there before March.
I know there were several ladies gathered together for a movie when we were there so they get to have movie nights and everything. I saw a puzzle table set up and they have once-a-month meetings for the men to go out to breakfast or either have breakfast brought in. I did not see any men in this facility though except for one maintenance man. Most of what I saw were ladies but then I didn't see over 8 or 9 residents. I was a little concerned about it being mostly elderly women but I think that's normal.
The room where my brother would be is in a section with 5 or 6 other rooms where there were men. That sounded good to me. They also said they had a little area that they can get outside and maybe plant tomatoes in the spring and a nice little patio for them to sit out on.

I went to Shelby Gardens Place. It was clean. It was nice. It just felt more like an old folks home than a retirement community. I just felt the room was just way too small. It was not comfortable to visit. I would not have wanted to visit my mom because those rooms. I wouldn't have minded if my mom were 90 and the rooms were that small. But because I'm hoping that she's agile, I just couldn't see her wanting to stay there (even on Assisted). It would be like, "No, I gotta get out." It was a good tour though, so it's a five.
They exercise every day. They have bingo, puzzles, coloring, music, and outings. They're open to ideas like if you have something that you want to go to, they could take you. They could take you to the nature centers. They could take you shopping. There's always something to do, if you want to.

I toured Shelby Gardens Place. The staff there is very energetic, warm, and caring. There's a lot of activities and the people are involved with the residents. Very compassionate. They do have a salon, the activities director comes in on Fridays or Saturdays and does manicures for the ladies. They do have a service on Sunday. They do have a lot of activities and their activities are well done for the residents. The building is well kept.

We went to Shelby Gardens Place. They were very welcoming and the facility was clean and inviting from the outside. They're very thorough with the information that they gave. We were very impressed. We met several people. A couple of the residents let us in to their apartment to see what the layout was. They were amenable to letting us just walk in and see their bedroom and bathroom and stuff like that. They were very kind in that respect. We weren't there for a meal, but we saw the menus and things like that. It was very impressive and they were making sure that we understood what services they provided and gave a breakdown. We have a brochure from them with the floor plans, and they worked out the estimated amount. It was prohibitive on our budget, but it was still a very inviting place. If it weren't for the money, it probably would be where we would go. It's a little further away than I want to be, but it was local. It was very impressive. It was just so large. We walked around a lot. It was daunting to walk as far as we had to, but if it were a resident, I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. To be able to see everything that one day was a lot.

Shelby Gardens Place was a nice place. The staff members were very informative. They've been contacting me since I went there. It is a topnotch place. You have control of the heating air in your room. It had a closet and a bathroom. Everything looks to be quite clean. They had a reading room and a nice piano sitting out where the classes were going on. Everybody had their own place. They were having some type of game or some type of class because they were responding as far as calling out to give an answer to what they were doing. They have little trips and outings.

Shelby Gardens Place did not have independent living, and the tour was good. It was an older place; that's not a big knock against them, but because it's an older place, it's smaller, and the hallways weren't open. The rooms were a good size, but the newer facilities have bigger rooms. It just had a feeling of not being cheery. We did not eat there, but the residents that we talked to there all claimed that the food was fantastic. We only met the marketing person, she was very good, and followed up very well, and talking to the residents. They said the staff was very good as well.

The staff at Shelby Gardens Place have been very helpful, so far. We're very pleased with the facility. It's very organized the way it's set up. They sent us pictures of my mother-in-law doing the activities. She appears to be happy and involved with what's going on. They asked us what she liked to eat. She hasn't complained about the food so far.

The sales staff was friendly on the phone. They even call this their home when they live out of state. I was impressed with their home like feel. They are under renovation but it seemed to look nice. I was hoping the rooms would be larger, but I was assured residents stay out of their rooms most of the time. They have two food choices and the activity director had many residents laughing and playing a game.

I had an in-person tour at Shelby Gardens Place. I would describe the experience there as very impressive. What I like most about the community is that the people seem to be active, there is life there, and people are involved, and I really like that. The part that the staff showed me was laid out very well. She showed me the cafeteria area, the area where they could sit out, and some of the rooms where they had meetings. A lot of the prices were based on the size of the rooms, so the whole thing was very impressive. They showed me the menu and how they planned the menu, and it was really good. I loved it because the places that I saw were geared to what they like. It was really a home setting away from home. It was like your own setting, like you decorate it, and I saw pictures and the TV, which I thought was awesome. It's assisted living but it's a home, too.

The staff here go above and beyond for the residents and their families. They even call once a month just to check in and make sure we are happy with the services they are providing. That to me, really shows they care about the residents.

This place has a nursing director out of this world. She makes the residents and staff love being in the community. Love this place.

The only room they had available at that time was their studio, which was smaller than a small hotel room; it was just claustrophobic. I had asked the person that I have met with for some additional information; she never followed up with me and hadn't gone back to me, so it kind of felt like they didn't want my business. I wish that they follow-up with people who come by. I know they had a calendar of activities, but I don't remember specifically what they had.

It was very clean. The facility was nice; its medium sized and it looked new. It looks like it was updated and very pleasant looking. It’s actually fairly close to my house and to the big Baptist Church. They’re just very friendly. The staff seemed very pleasant, very open and very willing to answer questions. The rooms were large. We went to the dining room. It was well lighted. There were nice restaurant style tables for people with a list of menu choices. Food was delivered to them on whatever they order. They had their list of activities like wi bowling. I just think there were too many residents there but it was lighter on a Saturday afternoon. Some people may have been tired and just somewhere else.

I was not impressed in particular. I just didn't get that right vibe from it. My mom wouldn't fit there. As far the facility went, it was fine. It might also be great for somebody else's mother, but it just wasn't right for Mother.

Overall, I think the facility is likely better than most. My grandmother and other residents routinely complain about the food both the quality and, at times, the quantity and there's never been any real improvement in that area that I know of, but she's made similar complaints about the food in other nursing home/rehab facilities in which she has stayed. The staff is generally friendly, from what I've seen, and is more-or-less responsive to residents' needs, though not always in a timely manner. My grandmother is still able to do many things for herself, so she sometimes can't get help or get it promptly when she needs it, which is a bit worrisome. Still, she's been in facilities where the response time was worse, so this facility may be a bit above average, in that department. One complaint she has now is that, because she's been approved to control her own prescription medication, she often can't get help from the nurses there for simple over-the-counter medications that she might need on occasion. Another complaint my grandmother has is that there aren't enough activities for the residents--or not enough that interest her, at least--and that there are few activities scheduled in the evening hours. Still, in comparison to other facilities I've had experience with, this one is better than others, in some respects, and no worse than other facilities, in other respects.
