Disappointed and disgusted
February 04, 2018
My mother was in this facility for rehab. The second floor rehab unit always smelled like urine. The place must be understaffed. One evening we were sitting in the dining room where about 16 to 20 residents were sitting in wheelchairs, watching TV. ONE CNA was watching 16 to 20 residents. This CNA had to use the bathroom and instead of calling for coverage, she just left for about 5 minutes, leaving all of these people at risk. When she returned, she immediately sat down (didn't look around to see how everyone was doing) and started texting, paying absolutely no attention to anyone's needs. My husband and I both witnessed this. We were shocked when she left the room. Then, as this CNA was sitting texting on her phone, a nurse walked into the room and didn't say a word to the CNA about not doing her job, stop the texting. NOTHING.
The day I went to pick up my mother to take her home, it was 9 a.m. My mother was still in bed, sleeping. When I finally got a CNA to get my mother dressed, the CNA said, "No wonder you're cold, you're soaking wet." So, 9 a.m. and my mother was still laying in bed in her own urine. I would like to offer to the owner of this facility to go lay in that bed, in his own urine. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? I was disgusted. Shame on them. There were two people covering a hall of rooms, so I'm going to guess at least 20 patients in that area. Shortstaffed!!

Placing a loved one who had suffered a stroke and was suffering from dementia into a nursing facility was a difficult endeavor. We feel extremely blessed to be able to do so in a facility that guided us through the process and addressed both physical as well as emotional needs. Briarcliffe deals with both their patients and the families with respect, compassion and professionalism. The facility is set in a very tranquil and relaxing environment. I will continue to recommend Briarcliffe Manor to friends and family.

My grandfather was a resident of Briarcliffe a little over a year ago for almost 6 months before he passed away. At first he went in because he was having some shorter term health issues and my grandmother was having a hard time managing to care for him on her own. One of his biggest issues was dementia. Before my grandfather went into Briarcliffe I had spent time visiting several other nursing homes in the area when my other grandmother was in them after a fall before she passed away. Briarcliffe was one of our top 2 experience-wise out of them all. For the most part the staff was really friendly and seemed good to my grandfather (although I realize there are exceptions everywhere). But it is so important to trust the staff when your family members have dementia. The one thing I used to dislike was that at times I felt there was a horrible hospital-like odor there. Sometimes it was worse than other times. I realize that this may be hard to avoid in nursing homes but there was one facility that my grandmother was in that never smelled and felt like we were visiting her in her own home and that was my point of comparison. But in any case the care that my grandfather received at Briarcliffe was great and I would recommend it to others.
