This facility is grossly understaffed! I am afraid to say more because my grandparent is still in the facility and I don't want backlash, but if you have a choice, we don't , look somewhere else.

It so happened that my sister had volunteered at St. John, so I was glad she could go somewhere that she was familiar with before she passed away. I saw activities on the calendar, but she wasn't able to partake in anything like that. They did try to encourage her when she was alert. The security was very good as far as I know. I had to stay at night sometimes, they were very caring as they made sure I was comfortable too, and I can't think of anything they could improve on frankly. I was very pleased.

St John provides compassionate, efficient service to my 96 year old mother-in-law. From the day she was admitted she has been content there and well cared for. The staff is loving and patient and there are activities that she enjoys. She also enjoys the meals and the snacks. It's a place where she can be herself despite her dementia and be accepted and comfortable.

This is a very large facility, and all the employees seem to be friendly and caring. My main concern is that it is understaffed. Good care is given to your loved ones, but if they are seeking social interaction with the workers, its best to take them somewhere else. The doctors there are knowledgeable but they too have a heavy case load. I really don't think they know one patient from the next unless the chart is in front of them. There is a lot of housekeeping and maintenance staffed during the day, you can find one easily if you have a problem. Nurses and aides, however, always seem to be too busy to talk to and take a very long time to answer the call bells. (My grandmother once had to wait 20 minutes to get clean silverware after she dropped hers...her food was cold by then) My grandmother does enjoy all the bingo and activities. There is a hair salon in the building where she gets it set every week. All in all it is a clean and safe environment, they just don't seem to have enough caregivers in such a large facility.

When entering St. Johns Specialty Care Center you will find the warm welcome from the receptionist at the entrance. Directions and a visitors badge are provided for security purposes. This center is located in the small, but quaint town of Mars, PA. The facility as a whole is designed with specific areas for patients: Demmentia, Alzheimers, Long Term Acute Ventilator Care, and General Care units. They have a new center just opening this month May 2011 for the memory impaired and this center is classified under personal care. The staff are very friendly and accomodating to the needs of the patient and family. The serene environment and location of this center makes it a nice choice for a family who desires the small town feel.
