I really like Barclay Friends. They have care from skilled nursing all the way up to memory care. It was an all-around for all phases of age. The only reason I didn't go there was because they didn't have a room close to dining for my dad. They were just opening up the new building, so I wasn't sure about their amenities. They were just starting to put residents in.

My mother experienced negligence at Barclay Friends in West Chester. The heels of her feet turned black from neglect. She had ulcers on her toes. I discovered it by accident because she her ankles appeared swollen and she seemed distressed. Upon removing her socks, I was horrified at what I saw. I reported the neglect to the State of PA. PA Department of Welfare did an investigation. Their findings were that Barclay Friends neglected the care of my mother. She has since died. By all appearances, the facility is beautiful, but the people who actually take care of the patients are disinterested and indifferent!! I don't normally write review of any kind, but this needs to be said as a warning. Keep a close eye on the people you love!

Barclay Friends was a lovely place. It has limestones that looked very beautiful and the garden areas were extremely beautiful. The food was very good. They have Bridge and board games. The decorations and placement of things were very good for a senior place.

As a family member of a former resident of this assisted living, I was able to observe first hand the pros and cons of this facility. One needs to look beyond the appearance of a facility to truly judge its quality. Indeed, Barclay's common areas are homey and pleasant with a few nice outdoor seating choices. The dining area is small but an elevator ride to an additional larger dining room is available.
But, I feel the true test is always the staff and unfortunately this is where Barclay fails.
Although not all, most of the aides are generally apathetic and preoccupied. Not really friendly or kind, they go through their tasks with a cold indifference that appears to be fostered by equally indifferent management. It seems to operate more similarly to an "independent living" setting where much less care is offered.
