The overall tour experience I had was good. I was not as impressed with the communication. The people that were working there may not have had as much training in memory care and it wasn't there as long as some of the other places. Other than that, I liked the fact that they had technology in the bedroom for movement so that they could detect whether or not the residents were moving in the middle of the night. The apartments were adequate. The space was just the right size. The whole place, in general, appeared very welcoming and home-like. The lady that gave the tour was very good. She gave a lot of information and was able to answer all of our questions with the reasonable information that we needed to make our decision. The dining area was nice and bright, too. Everything was very clean and orderly.

My mother moved to Woodland Creek Memory Care. It is beautiful. It is a one-floor building and it's very, very well-appointed. The memory care rooms are spacious. They have all the safety features like the pull cords and a sensor where if someone falls, it can tell at the front desk. It has automatic lights that go on when you walk into the bathroom. There's a lot of space for people who need wheelchairs or walkers. They have nice meals and my mother seems to like the food. I like the ratio of aides to residents and they all seem to be very caring. So far, we are happy with how she's being treated. They care for her and they take care of our needs. The staff I've met has been outstanding.

It is a beautiful facility. The staffing is great. What we liked about it, and why we were going to choose it is because it was fully memory care. So, we figured whatever they were doing in there was geared to people like my mom; it was all memory care. The place is absolutely beautiful. It was only open for two years now, so everything in there is practically new. Each room has a picture of the person, so that helps to identify the room, we were impressed with that. It has a bio about that person, and what they used to be like, and the family writes up the bio and supplies that picture. The room that she would have had was right near the nursing station. It's a beautiful setup. Everything was nice about that place. The one downfall is when we asked about the assistance that they provide to a dementia person. They need care to tell them how to even get up to go shower, and they don't know how to do that. When we signed up and put a deposit of $10,000 down, and then got into more particulars about what their day would be like, their staff said they get showers twice a week. That right there is not acceptable, not with a senior citizen who may wet themselves every day. Then we asked them, if she was confused that night with going to the bathroom, she'll get up and fall. The staff said they have motion lights to know when they get up, but that doesn't mean that every time she's going to be in the bathroom, somebody is going to be in there to help her. We know that it's not a 24-hour thing, and they don't have a one-on-one, but those are just some concerns. We just decided not to go. If we're going to pay almost $7000, we may as well keep her at home, comfortable, and hire two people to come into our home.

Woodland Creek was the other contender. It's set up like a circle instead of a square. The courtyard was in the center, so they can go out there, but they were not going to be able to escape. They can go outside whenever they want. They were within the same price range. It was the first one we toured, and we liked it. The person who toured us was very knowledgeable, very caring, and sympathetic. She just really knew her stuff. It's kept well. Just beautiful surroundings. The staff was friendly. They had an activity room, a big movie room, and music. And then they also have this sensory spa room for the more severe Alzheimer's cases to calm them down. It has all kinds of different sensory things in this room, and it was really neat. So that was a cool thing. They definitely have transportation, and they have a doctor that comes in. They have the podiatrist, the vision, and the dental that will come in so that you don't have to take them out.
