About This Community

With its indoor heated swimming pool, fitness center and expansive, green campus, Sherwood Oaks is planning for the next generation of retirees. The retirement community opened in 1982 after careful planning by a grassroots effort of retirees who wanted to give themselves and their friends the option to stay in the Pittsburgh area during their retirement. After years of studying other communities, they patterned Sherwood Oaks after the best of what they had observed during their travels.

Today, the retirement community has a renovated Community Center, an expanded wellness program, more dining options and is currently providing services to the next generation of retirees, including:

  • Excellent ratings by the Center for Medicare Services
  • Lake-view walking trails
  • Healthy dining choices
  • Indoor heated lap swimming pool and Jacuzzi
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Exercise, Tai Chi and Yoga classes
  • Fully-equipped Fitness Center
  • Newly constructed apartments and patio home residences

Throughout these changes, however, Sherwood Oaks continues as a community where active retirees enjoy the benefits of a secure, independent lifestyle with the backup of on-site health care and unlimited nursing care.

Sherwood Oaks was comprehensive. They provided skilled nursing and a retirement village as well. It was a full-spectrum facility. It was excellent and the kind of place I would consider going to myself. It was a larger facility than the other place I visited. It had a number of activities and different things available that a smaller facility could not supply.

My father has lived here for nearly 20 years and is now 100. He started in "independent living" in a lovely single level cottage home within walking distance of the community center. He recently had a stroke and is currently in skilled nursing and will soon move to the beautiful new Oak Grove building. This is a fabulous place.

My doctor said she has heard some nice things about Sherwood Oaks. We dropped by, they gave us a tour, and I never looked at anything else. It was convenient for my children. They live in this area. It had everything I needed, and it has different levels if I would want to move on to the next level. The staff is very helpful. There are lots to do if I want to, and I am getting involved. They have a beautiful library, and I help in there. I go to a knitting class, and I joined an exercise class. The food is wonderful, and we have a menu to choose from everyday. I am in a patio home, so I have a bedroom, a living room, and a kitchen. I have another room and I am using it for dining. The security is wonderful. They walk the property, and they drive around. It's a huge facility with beautiful gardens. At night after dinner, they have programs and movies, and kids come in and sing, I'm a little bit nervous being out at night here, and I don't like to be out at night alone anyway, so I don't participate in a lot of them.

We were looking for continuing care and we toured the place because it's near where my son lives. It was very nice. We were not unhappy with it all! It was some kind of a high-end continuing care facility and rather expensive or, it's just that their paying plan is not acceptable to us. Well, the only problem is that the area is just so cold in the winter. We were looking for some place maybe a little warmer. But we liked the little individual condos that they have. Their dining area was fine and the food was nice. They have many activities there. I particularly like reading and their library. The people there were very nice and friendly. The staff that we met was very nice. We were happy with it and we seriously considered going there. The physical layout of the place is alright but it's just not for us. It's too cold there.

The staffing for Sherwood Oaks in Cranberry, PA is outstanding. According to the Medicare Survey of this facility they exceed the state average of Registered Nursing coverage per patient hours in a day. The residents receive on average of 1 hour of licensed staff per day for their care. This includes a mix of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Nursing Assistants. This is a smaller facility and they often are close to capacity with a total of 60 certified beds available. The location of Sherwood Oaks in the wonderful neighborhood of Cranberry is a great area. The development and continued growth of this area makes it an attractive residence for patients and families to live in. This is a continued care retirement community which does require a greater down payment prior to moving in to Sherwood Oaks. They do however provide the resident with the care that they will need and if the require additional assistance they can move into a more skilled area within the facility.
