I went to look at Elmwood Assisted Living at the Shawhan. They have a good staff that is helpful and caring. It's nice if you like nostalgia, as it's a bit retro. They have weekly outings, a salon, an ice cream parlor, bingo, and exercise. The food was good.

I had been to Elmwood, and that is a wonderful place. I thought they were very caring. The people that I visited there had their own little suites. These folks were not as disabled as my parents were. It was less of a nursing facility. It was in the Shawhan hotel, which was a hotel in the early 1900s. It was renovated and turned into a facility for Alzheimer's, and then they had assisted living. The staff was terrific. The people that I talked to that had lived there really liked their facilities, and they were happy there. I do know they had an ice cream parlor. Quite a few months of the year, they would have it open to the public. On Wednesdays, they had sales there so that people would come to the first floor and it was like a yard sale. They had many activities. They would take their residents here and there. They had an aviary, and people could see different birds.

This assisted living facility was great. My grandpa was a resident after a surgery at one, and the staff treats you like you are one of their own family members. They are patient, understanding and will keep the family informed of everything that is going on. The facility was like a home away from home. The entire place was clean, comfortable and put you at ease. The facility was a very busy place, but the staff never made you feel like you were wasting their time or got impatient with you when you had a question or concern. I could tell my grandpa was happy and comfortable here, and I was glad to see that. I was also very thankful, as he had a rough battle with cancer and not long before my grandma had passed away. There is a good amount of staff on duty 24 hours a day, and the nurses and their aids are always there when you need them. The entire place was kept neat and clean and you never had to think whether or not this place was questionable. If I, or any of my family members ever needed to go into an assisted living facility, this would be the one I would chose.
