My brother took ill, he had congestive heart failure, diabetes, had suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with mild Parkinson's. For over four years I lived in his home, took care of finding him the best doctors, keeping track of all of his medicines, making sure he saw a podiatrist monthly as allowed by his insurance.....and I made sure his socks and shoes were such that they would not cause pressure sores. I also made sure he had a nutrient diet, and I took a course for diabetics. When I could no longer take care of him because of his falling and his muscle weakness we decided to put him in a nursing home......I wanted him to have the best. My brother was in Bethany for three months, his diet wasn't controlled, he wasn't given the care they were charging him for, they put Ted hose on him and refused to give him diabetic supplemental drinks because they said they couldn't afford to (he was being charged 315.00 a day and still they had no money to feed him properly).. When he called for help his bell would ring anywhere from 10 minutes to 4 hours (and that was with me calling and telling them he needed help). In the three months he was there 5 requests by the doctors were made for him to see a podiatrist.....the podiatrist had been there four times and had not been given the orders to see him. When I saw the podiatrist leaving one day (I recognized him by his shoes) I was told that it would be another month since a doctor had not written a request (the health department found five of them in his file) Once I got him to the hospital (it took 3 days before Bethany would let him go.....what the nurses, the podiatrist at the hospital and myself found was horrible. He had pressure sores on both feet he had a MRSA cap on one of his toes that had been ignored. The nurses asked how long he had had the TED hose on between changing.....and he said they rarely did. The hospital was able to determine that it was severe neglect, he was malnourished and the MRSA infection that had been ongoing for sometime turned his toe to gangrene.....his toe was removed, many procedures were done to try and save his leg from the gangrene but none of the procedures which drained his savings could stop the gangrene....and since his heart was weak they could not amputate his leg. My brother died a horrible death because in my humble opinion they did not take care of him properly. The Health Department has cited them twice for the incident.......and I am hoping that my brother's death will be the cause of this badly run facility to be closed down. As for visiting.....it's a pretty place......but badly run

Bethany Lutheran Village was very nice and very comprehensive. They have all levels of service, they have all styles from apartments to cottages, and they have all levels of caring from independent to assisted living to Alzheimer's unit. They will take care of you no matter what happens as you progress down to the final part of your life. It was spotless. I did not try the food, but I have talked to people who have, and they say it's very good. In the independent living sections, there are several dining rooms, and they have chefs that have been trained in New York and so forth and so on, and they do a wonderful variety and tasty menu for the residents.
