It's been almost a month since we placed my aunt in Saybrook Landing. She is receiving rehab there, but she is in the memory care unit. It's been very good, so far. All the staff has been very pleasant, very accommodating, and willing to update me on her care. It's beautiful and very clean. It's a very nice facility.
I know they were getting a new activity director or something; it will be someone to work in the memory unit. My aunt really does not do a lot, but I know they give her different books, crosswords, and word search kind of things as far as actual activities.
It's a little more expensive, but it's a nice facility. They have this one wing that is a locked unit.

We've had our ups and downs the past 5 years but overall Saybrook Landing is a great place for the elderly who can no longer live on their own and need medical attention. Overall, the staff in the trenches...nurses, aides, food and custodial folks all do a wonderful job for the residents. Yes, there are a few bad apples in every barrel but those people quickly instructed to give the residents the proper respect and treatment and for the most part, they end up doing their job correctly. The administrators are always on top of any situation from a medical, food or laundry issue to the resident "government". Residents received a newsletter and handouts as to what the activities will be for that month; so there's plenty to do at the site or they can be active by taking a local day trip on the Saybrook Landing bus. All rooms are private suites so you can't beat that!
As a family member, it is ALWAYS our responsibility to advocate for our elderly family members - so no matter what facility your loved one is in, stay involved, treat all the people employed there with respect and encourage your family member to do so, too. With that said, also encourage your family member to TALK TO YOU often regarding even the smallest concerns. Residing at Saybrook Landing can be a positive and pleasant experience for all.

I needed some rehab services after a bout with weakness. Saybrook Landing got me back on my feet, and back to doing the things that I love to do. The food was great, and it's even prepared by an actual chef! All of the staff did their best to make my experience, as much like home as humanly possible.

My father needed to stay in a skilled nursing facility after a bad fall, in order to receive rehabilitation before returning back home. He stayed at Saybrook Landing for approximately a month, earlier this year. Unfortunately, my experience with Saybrook Landing was a mixed bag. The nurses, orderlies, and aides were typically professional, friendly and appeared to be very competent. The facility itself is well-decorated, tasteful, and the furnishings are mostly new (probably due to the young age of the place). The food was even fairly good, which was a surprise for me. My biggest gripe is that the "rehab" that my father was supposed to receive, which was in fact his reason for being in the facility to begin with, was pretty much non-existent. He watched TV, spent time with other residents, and hung out. Rehab? Someone came to work with him for an hour or so, twice per week. We complained numerous times to the facility, and were told that that was their schedule. I don't feel that he got much physical rehabilitation at all in the time that he was there, and he spent much of his day bored out of his mind. We eventually had to complain loudly enough for Saybrook Landing to discharge him, since they admitted there really hadn't been a reason for him to be there so long after all. If you need long-term care, this facility is probably great. If you're there for a convalescent stay, you won't be benefiting much from their care, in my opinion.
