Patient's Advocate
If you let anyone from this agency into your home or that of a loved one, BEWARE. Please watch them like a hawk and document anything that doesn't seem right, no matter how trivial. Here are facts (and signs) to be aware of: 1) health care providers should not develop a personal relationship or exhibit excessive over-involvement with a person under care; 2) giving gifts and accepting gifts are forbidden; 3) providing other services for cash is forbidden; 4) discussions about the patient's will are inappropriate at best, and asking to receive inheritance or vying to play a role in estate disposition and/or executorship are forbidden; 5) intentionally upsetting the patient to break family or personal ties and the patient's safety network is forbidden; 6) asking the patient to prevent their advocates from reporting their concerns is forbidden. I am dealing with all of these issues with a VNS Westchester care-provider, who intentionally destroyed my 47-year close relationship with the patient because I raised concerns about these behaviors. If the same thing is happening to you, please call the NYS Office of the Aging or Protective Services for Adults. I tried to inform VNS about it, but they refused to listen. VNS Westchester, you need to do a far better job of training and monitoring to prevent this type of activity, and you need to give patient advocates the ability to initiate discussions when they have concerns without disclosing the patient's/provider's name. In the absence of that, you are complicit in the predatory behavior and can't possibly identify actions needed to make your service safe for the patient (and their advocates).
