About This Community
A small Victorian-style adult home located in Mohawk, New York, has a long history of providing care to the elderly of the Mohawk Valley.
The facility was established in 1895 when a group of individuals recognized the need for a home where elderly women could live out their remaining years with dignity, comfort, and security.
The home was initially named the Old Ladies Home of Herkimer County and was led by a board of managers with Mrs. Helen C. Marshall as president. In 1967, the home was renamed The Mohawk Homestead.
Today, the facility is a non-for-profit facility and continues to operate as a home-like residence for the elderly, with funding coming from room and board payments, donations, and revenue from various fundraising events.
The Mohawk Homestead has played an important role in the history of the Mohawk Valley.
