They released my father too early against my wishes and he fell the next day and ended up back at the hospital

My dad was a resident at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River. They're very short staffed and I was not happy with any of it. I especially had problems dealing with case workers or trying to speak to the case worker. They gave us wrong information more often than not. The facility itself was beautiful because it's all just been renovated, so it's all new. There's a separate cafeteria for the staff and a separate cafeteria for patients who are allowed to be out of their rooms and about. The problem with the nurses is that they seemed very unhappy when they had to clean my father, who was having difficulty with his bowels. He would not feel it when he had to go and dirty diaper. You could see some of the nurses, not all of them, but some of them, didn't want to be bothered, but they had no choice. Their food was excellent. I don't know about activities because my father was not involved in anything other than physical therapy. He was pleased with the therapists. He had a speech therapist because he had a stroke. Perhaps if they had enough people, it might not have been that way, but I know that a lot of the staff were stressed. I remember one nurse in particular who was telling us she worked 14-hour shifts, not 12 but 14, because that's how short staffed they were. The rooms were beautiful, very well clean, and nice. They were bright with large windows. My father was in a private room. I peeked on a couple of the other rooms, and they also were very nice. They were spacious and were not tight quarters by any means. My father was a stroke victim, so his food had to be pureed, but even pureed my father liked the food. When they finally switched him over to more solid food, he had no complaints. There were certain things he could not eat, like tiny things, like peas and corns. They made certain that he was getting the kinds of food that he could swallow. They were attentive to that point. He was there a very short time, and I will say I believe strongly that they discharged him prematurely. This was through Medicare. Their story was that Medicare would not allow my father to stay any longer, and therefore it dictates that he be discharged. They felt he was well enough to go home, which he was not, because the trip from the hospital to his home was only a matter of 15 minutes, and after an hour or so, my father was still soiling himself. He had no control. He was not ready to go home, but they kicked him out.

Encompass was very good. My cousin was there in January 2019. She had broken her hip on Christmas, she went there right after the broken hip, and they were fabulous. It's clean, it's easy to get to, and it's a very good place. The nurses were nice, the staff was great, the food was good, and the care was excellent. It was a very nice facility, and all the people there were very, very nice. It was very nice and always clean. All the people were friendly. They had a snack bar you could go to and make yourself a snack. You could have coffee or tea anytime of the day or night. Visiting hours are really good, and if you want to stay, you could stay as long as you didn’t make a mess. Th residents were all treated well. They have PT in the morning, memory care, and speech therapy. They really do take care of you there. They're very responsive.

Do Not put yourself or anyone you care about here. The Bulk of the staff is rude, impatient, and has basically 0 % compassion. Look elsewhere you can Definitely do Better.

Poor care, phones don’t work, poor nursing, bad PT no continuity on staff for pt and ot. Differing patient reports from each staff member. Lucky my husband got out alive.

The staff at this facility were very respectful and very helpful at all times. My grandfather often requires a lot of help doing just about everything as is common with many dementia patients; I especially like the choices of meals and the privacy. The best part was that whenever he should need help of some sort the nurses would come right around to help him. My only criticism is that a few times my son was not permitted to enter the facility due to fears of H1N1, while these were definitely well natured they seemed slightly paranoid since he showed no signs of infection. While he was there they helped him choose what he wanted even though often it was the cheese burger, they would encourage him to make healthier choices, which we liked as well. While we were not there the nurse would always go in and make sure he was okay, even catch him if he tried to make one of his escapes. Overall an excellent assisted living facility.
