Peeling paint, dirty, bed bugs...rude staff, only interested in collecting money.

Daughter of a relative

My mother has stayed a couple of times in Big Elm for her rehab. In the past she was placed in nice big rooms that were well maintained. She had hip surgery which the surgeron took out her hip due to infection. All of the paperwork was sent to Big Elm. My mother has been in extreme pain due to the surgery so Big Elm took her in for x-ray. They called me to tell me my mother's hip was broken & I tried to explain to them no she had surgery which removed her hip. Well I could tell that Big Elm had not even reviewed my mother's paperwork from the hospital which upset me. This time she wanted to go back to Big Elm and I have not been that pleased. The room she is in she is sharing with another patient which takes up more than half of the room and my mom is crammed into a small corner and her bedside nightstand is old and she can't even get the drawers open. The room has holes in the walls and red stuff on the ceiling. The hall she is on is really run down and they need to update this hall. I have smelled odors a couple of times when visiting my mom. They are extremely short staffed BUT I will say the nurses, CNA's, etc have been extremely nice and try to care for my mother the best they can. I am writing this review and hope Big Elm makes some adjustments since I am looking at other facilities that I hope to get my mom moved to.

Please do not put your loved one in this facility. My grandmother was 93 and spent a little over a month there before she slid out of her bed and hit the cement floor. She was then placed in a wheelchair and left at the front desk, where they tend to leave all of the residents. My family was not notified. When my 96 year old grandfather got there for lunch, hours later, she was sitting there yelling in pain. He tried to wheel her to her room but couldn't, so a nice PT assistant came out and helped him. She was then put to bed, where she stayed until 8:30 that night, when they came to take xrays. It was 4:30 the following morning when they got the results and she was taken to the hospital for a broken hip, which they repaired with surgery but she never recovered from, and she passed away last Tuesday. Falls happen, especially with the elderly. I don't blame the nurses or CNA's, who for the most part were wonderful and caring. Most of them are doing the best they can, but they are short staffed and overworked. What's not right is how it was handled. When we called to tell them she was in surgery, the social worker felt the need to tell us that "yeah, her and her husband made quite a scene out at the desk when he got here yesterday." And when her son went down there try to get to the bottom of what happened and asked to see the report from her fall, it was explained that there was a flood in the office and it couldn't be found at that time, so we asked that it be sent to us. Almost a month later, we still have not seen a report, which we can only believe doesn't exist, since no one was notified of her fall that morning. I believe at one time this was a great facility. It has obviously gone downhill. I don't want anyone else to go through what we went through. Please, put your loved one somewhere else.

Big Elm was terrible. The staff was there for the money and not to care for the patients there or the residents. It was dirty. I could never put my mother in a place like that. The rooms were very small. They were double rooms more or less and no privacy. Even in the single rooms there was no privacy. There was no apartment. The food and the dining facility were nasty. Everybody got the same meal except for some baby foods for some of the residents. It was not good and not appealing to look at. It was just something I would never go to myself, and I wouldn’t even put my cat there.

I cannot say enough about how caring and compassionate the staff is at the retirement center. Always clean and excellent care. I would highly recommend Big Elm.

Big Elm
My husband was a patient at Big Elm for rehab and I cannot say enough about their service. Their staff exceeded our expectations and were very friendly. The center was always clean and their newly renovated rooms are beautiful. Big Elm you are the best.

My mother in law is a patient at Big Elm for 3 months. The staff is uncaring, and unconcerned about her health. They are not helpful when we call and check on her and do not seem at all interested in our concerns. We would not recommend this center to anyone

Just got off the phone with Vickie (hope I spelled her name right). She was kind and considerate, thinking mostly of our family problems. I had called from Arizona, for my sister in Kannapolis. She offered help and assistance, so kind...I truly appreciate everything she did. Give this girl a raise!!!
