I don’t like White Oak of Charlotte. People just sit around, and I don’t think the staff is attentive enough. I don’t like it. Food is OK, but I didn’t see any activities when I was there.

I liked White Oak Manor; it has nice appeal. It's smaller, smelled good, had lots of windows, and the residents looked clean and happy. From what I saw in a short visit, I would give it five stars compared to the other ones that I have seen. The staff was very friendly and informative, let me walk around, and showed me everything. It was small and had a comfortable feel; nobody was screaming or uncomfortable. The residents looked like they were at ease. I was there right about lunch time, so everybody was moving toward the dining room, and it looked nice. If we bring Mom to this area, this is where she will go.

White Oak Manor reminded me of an old State hospital. You walked in, and it was old school kind of dingy and very worn looking. Once you got out of the first floor lobby area, the smell of food hits you in the face. I didn't see much of anything going on activity-wise. It was just people sitting around. The director that took us on a tour was very nice, very friendly, and knowledgeable. It was just old, and it smelled old.

White Oak was the first rehabilitation facility that I had any experience with, so I didn't really know what to expect. My experience with having my dad there was very disappointing to say the least. They seemed to be very understaffed. There were times when I was there with him and he had to wait almost an hour to be changed when he had gone to the bathroom. His bathroom always smelled like urine and at one point my mom saw a roach in there. When I brought it to the attention of the housekeeper, she said there were a lot of roaches there and questioned why we didn't check that out before we brought him there (I didn't realize that was even something that i needed to check out!) The final straw was when my dad basically just slept for 4 days and no one there seemed to be concerned as to why. It turns out that his carbon dioxide levels were very high and he ended up in the ER and then ICU.
