My mother moved into Bethesda Hawthorne Place three weeks ago. It's close to me. The staff is very nice and helpful. She hasn't said anything either way about the food. I can't go there and see mom. I haven't been inside, but the outside is very nice.

We went to Bethesda Hawthorne Place. It was very nice; however, there wasn't much happening there at all. They didn't have the big bistro and the restaurant. It was very small. They had one-entrée that was served that night, which was from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., so it was very limited in its dining options. Also, all their activities were going on in the morning. Bethesda Hawthorne Place didn't compare with the other community. It was nice and brand new, but it was isolated. I didn't see any staff members either. The girl who showed us around couldn't have been nicer, but I didn't see anybody else.

Bethesda Hawthorne Place is smaller than the other community we saw. It's a very nice place, and it's one of the newer senior places in the area. It's like a hotel and their amenities are very nice. It's unreal. The two people I met were very competent, outgoing, and I really enjoyed meeting them. It's all on one floor. The dining area is like a hotel restaurant. The activities they do are just like the other places. They have all kinds of crafts, and I like that there are kitchens where people can do cooking with guidance. The other thing about them is that they have three communities of assisted living and each one has its own separate wing, facilities, directors, and so forth. The outdoor areas are ample, nice, and flat, and you can walk or sit outside on the patios.

Bethesda Hawthorne Place is expensive. Their memory unit is a closed lockdown unit, kind of like a prison. If they have the right care, they can lead meaningful lives without being behind closed doors. The place is hospital-clean and sterile. The lady there was very personable and she does her job well. However, I would not recommend it even though it's in my neighborhood. The staff is very robotic. They're just doing their job with no warm, fuzzy feeling. They have a salon and an open cafe. The building is very nice.
