The Gietner Home on Broadway in St. Louis is where my Grandmother lives. The nursing home boasts a wonderful staff of aides and nurses who really get to know both their patients and their patients' families. The environment is very friendly and provides low security care for those elderly people who can no longer care for themselves, including those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Unfortunately, the building itself leaves much to be desired. It has clearly seen better days, an old building that has been adapted to house the elderly in individual and group rooms. The staff and visitors often have to climb many flights of stairs while the antique cage elevator is mostly reserved for patients with limited mobility. The patients' rooms each come with a window air conditioner, as the facility itself was build prior to the invention of air conditioning, which means that the building can be quite stuffy in the summer months. However, the compassion and personal care of the staff makes up for the state of the facility itself.
