My brother is in Ascension Living Sherbrooke Village. What I like best is it was less than a mile from his house, so he was happy, he was so close to home. I very rarely interact with the staff. He says the food is OK. He sounded less enthused about it than he did about the food at the other place, but it was still OK. His room is OK. He has an even better view of the outside because he's at the end of a corridor and there are deer around. The grounds there back up to a walking trail and some wooded areas. I found it confusing at first because there are at least three different areas in two different buildings, so it was a little hard to figure out which door to use when I took him in. We've only had one care plan meeting. I've never met the therapist. The staff at the nurses' station did not seem as friendly as the ones at the other place, but then my brother hasn't been there that long. When I asked how his therapy evaluation went, they said I had to talk to the therapist, so I stopped asking them questions.

This nursing home is terrible. Me father was there under hospice care. They refused to honor the hospice prescriptions and medicated when they felt like it. The nursing staff was cold, uncaring, mean and curt. We actually heard them say, oh it’s them again. I found my dad half naked in a chair in the hallway when I came one day. They did not care. I would never allow a loved one to stay in this nursing home.

Our experience with Alexian Bros Sherbrooke Village was great. My dad was there for rehab and they were really good. Their rehab facilities are all vinyl-tiled -- compared to carpeted floors in the place we picked. They were wonderful and my dad liked the food there. It's more like a hospital than a home, but I only got to see the rehab unit. They had a lot of things going on like cards and board games. He had a great time talking to people there.

They almost killed me. I was there for rehab and it was terrible. The help and food were lousy. They were supposed to do rehab with me, but they dropped me, and I couldn't walk for two weeks after that. They did no rehab with me. I peed in my diapers and they'd let me lay there all night and all morning until they got to me to change me. I also got a big sore on my behind. The food wasn't any good and it was so dry. I couldn't eat it.

I was in this place for three days & it was a nightmare, I went for rehab after surgery & many days in the hospital for tests which left me very weak & my knee would not hold me up after being in bed too long. My first request was for someone to help me get a shower because I hadn't had one for 10 days, no luck, it's Sunday, they only do baths on Wednesday, Friday & Saturday. The aides didn't seem to have any training & no compassion at all. I was left with a commode (which they never wanted to empty) & a wheelchair by my bed. There was a call button which was useless because you couldn't communicate to anyone. I had went to the hospital three times by ambulance because of vomiting & diarrhea & was told to return to the ER if this happened again. On my third day there I started vomiting at 10:00 pm, I ask for an ambulance, the nurse came in & said "you'll be fine" & walked out, I continued to vomit in a trash can with no one even caring & a promise that an ambulance had been called, my daughter called 6 times, they wouldn't answer the call, finally at 11:45 pm a 'private ambulance' came (not the County ambulance). I was to the point of passing out from being sick in a trash can all that time. I have many more stories about this place but limited space to voice them. I still have nightmares about my care there, don't be misled by the beauty of this place, I'll never return there.

I had rehab at Sherbrooke Village after my first knee replacement. I was so happy with my care there, I returned after my second knee replacement. I love the Alexian Brothers, and Sherbrooke is a wonderful place to rehab and recover.

I thought Alexian Brothers was like a religious type of retreat. The place was fairly new, and for assisted living, they’re in good quarters. It was quartered off a certain area where they couldn’t go anywhere, and it was like a T-shape when you walk in. There are rooms on each side of the walkway, and then it goes into a main room that tees off. One side would be east, the other side would be dining, and that’s it; that’s all the room they had. It’s small like a prison, and it didn’t smell real well either. All the staff did was see the people sitting there doing nothing; they didn’t seem very attentive. The biggest thing I’ve seen was TV, and that’s about it for them. They had different activities for the ones who were available, and they would go shopping. They did say that they like their food, and they could get what they want if they didn’t like what they were serving. Other people might like it, but I didn’t like it at all.

take better care

If you do not care if your family member is bathed in 10 days after surgery, had the right meds, tests to monitor conditions, fresh water to drink, changing bandages for 10 days this is the place for you. And then of course, you will love a staff that tells you this has all been done when it has not.

Alexian Bros Sherbrooke Village is beautiful and new. My only concern was they were under-staffed. It's a four-wing facility and the nurses would have to take care of the patients, serve meals, wash dishes, etc., they're just overwhelmed.
