I visited West Oaks Senior Care & Rehab Center and I was really turned off by it. It didn't take me long to determine that that's not where I would put my aunt. First of all, the location is not good. It sits right on West Eight Mile Road and it's a really busy street. When I pulled into the parking lot and approached the entrance, there were residents sitting in their wheelchairs outside the front door smoking cigarettes, and I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. There is a distance requirement when you're smoking outside of a business, but they were literally right there at the door. I walked in and the lobby looked nice, but there were people sitting around in their wheelchairs all up and down the hallway. I was told that some of them were coming from the dining room and they were going to be going somewhere else. Some of these people can hardly take care of themselves, so they're slumped over in their wheelchairs, and some of them did not appear to have been cleaned up. For that to be a first impression, that really kind of turned me off. They just told me sometimes they take them up on the third floor for games or to watch TV. It was generic and I was really surprised. The admissions director was kind of young, and he gave me the impression that he had not been there very long, because as I was asking questions about certain things, he sort of stuttered to give me an answer. If I walk in the door and find my aunt sitting in the hallway like this in a wheelchair, I'm not going to be very happy. He didn't really seem to have convincing explanations as to why they were just sitting there like that. Once we got there, he showed me a room, which I was not impressed with, and I told him I didn't think that was the right fit for my aunt.

West Oaks Senior Care & Rehab Center has a friendly atmosphere, and all the people are nice. It is a good place. The staff is very positive, interactive, and they're willing to give you or lead you to the right information.
