for the most part the staff is/was really great but there is one person on staff who actually yells at residents and will tell them to shut up. Are you kidding me? Why is she working here? The management is a little shaky

Marian Oakland was a nice place, but the building itself was old. I liked the atmosphere there. The staff was pleasant to work with. The rooms were OK, but were just a little bit too small for me. They had transportation for the residents, a game room, and a sitting area.

Marian Oakland was small, and the facility didn't seem that inviting. The room looked OK, and it looked clean. The person that assisted us was really knowledgeable about the place. She did a good job. They have one dining area, and it looked OK. I didn't see any amenities. They have a van, and they told us that they take them on excursions to the grocery store and things like that. The facility itself was small. It couldn't accommodate a person with a wheelchair. It was a problem. There were some issues getting in and out of the doors of the place.

The rooms that Marian Oakland had were extremely small and we thought that the price was high for the amount of space in the one-bedroom unit. The atmosphere was fine. Cleanliness was OK. They had a nice community room. The staff person that gave us a tour was very, very nice.

There are a couple of things about Marian Oakland that just didn't fit mom at all. They say it's an independent living, but the living quarters are like a studio. It did not have a kitchen in the apartment. It's just a space for your bed and then a small bathroom. No residents are allowed to cook in their apartments. They all go to a group lounge area for food. You have a choice to sit down there to eat or they will deliver your food. Mom likes to cook and she does everything on her own. I wouldn't recommend this place for someone independent. This place would be for someone that was dependent on the facility and needed assistance. It was very expensive. It was almost $1000 and it didn't include your home setting like a bedroom, a kitchen, and a living space. It's like half of a studio. It's very small, so that didn't work. That wasn't what mom was looking for. We had a scheduled appointment and they didn't have anybody. The manager didn't let anyone know that we were coming. I ended up having to get a tour from one of the ladies that worked in the kitchen. I said to her we can come back at another time and she goes, "No, no, I'll take you around," and she was nice to do it, but you can tell that wasn't her normal job responsibility. She did her best though. They gave us a brochure, but the brochure doesn't talk about activities and things like that. It was just mostly talking about square footage and cost. She gave me a history of how the place was established.

I toured Marian Oakland. It was old. When I first came, it reminded me of barracks in the army. The staff didn't have a one-bedroom to show me, so she showed me what she had, which was a suite. They had studios, suites, and one-bedrooms. It was a nice suite. She told me that they could take it down the middle and one side would be a studio for somebody. That's how she let me know how the studio would look. The suite was pretty big and nice. It had two doors. They had an outside porch that runs along the apartments that I didn't like. I didn't like it. There were leaves all around the place outside the door area. They shouldn't have been there as far as I was concerned because it's not fall right now. When I came in, I didn't know where to go. I had to keep on walking and looking, and there was a door, and it was open. I looked in there, and the staff said, 'Can I help you?' I felt like they were supposed to be looking for me. I said, 'Yes, I'm here for a tour.' And she said, 'Oh, OK,' and she said it like she wasn't prepared for me. But she did take me on the tour. I saw the cafeteria and she offered me to eat there, and I told her no, I didn't want to eat. The food smelled good. The dining area was nice. Inside, they have wooden floors. The place was just old to me, and the upkeep as well as can be expected.

Marian Oakland was really nice and very clean, but it was out of my budget. I looked at their one-bedroom and what they call a suite and even though the dimensions were pretty standard, they looked small and cramped. The grounds were nice though. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

the good things are that the majority of the staff is wonderful and the grounds are really nice. The bad things can be the food and dining room, there are meals that I like and some that I don't and the dining room staff is pleasant for the most part but there is one woman working in there who clearly does not like her job and will get into arguments with the residents and that should never be allowed!

I'm in an independent living facility called Marian Oakland. It’s fair with yearly rent increases and supposed to be a non-profit agency, but it really hurts the income of the senior citizen. The rooms are too small, the staff is good, and the attitude is reasonable. The meals are good or average. They have movie nights, bingo, and visits to baseball games, the zoo, and restaurants. It's pretty much a self-contained building with a large community room with TV, library, and computers. There's no gym and exercise room. I've been here for a year.

Marian Oakland is nice and well run. It's an older facility, but it's in good shape. Everything has been good up to this point. My uncle loves the food and he's very happy with it. His room is not very big, but it's nice. Everything in there is brand new, even though it's an old facility. The tub has a cutaway, so seniors can get in and out of it. It's pretty accommodating for somebody like him. They had a Saint Patrick's Day party. They've been very helpful to me especially the director. They keep me in touch, and they contact me when we have issues with prescriptions. I've got no complaints. The seniors seem happy, even my uncle who's kind of a recluse.

I visit my relative here. I observe the interactions between all the tenants and the staff at the facility, and the staff seems to be on top of everything. Everything seems to be nice. The rooms are studios. They are not very big, but they are good enough for one person. For the most part, the amenities meet the needs of the residents there. The staff seems to be very friendly and helpful.

My mother lives in a studio apartment. All her meals are included. They have activities and field trips and the DSO is coming to play for them at no charge. The staff is wonderful. She gets housekeeping once a week. The people are wonderful, and the saleslady is fabulous. I can't say enough about it. We were in a really tough situation but my mom is doing really well now. We wished it was a little closer though. They have exercise class twice a week, bingo, for Grandparents Day they had a family barbecue, trips, movie nights, and ice cream socials. It's a really great place. They have extra services that you can purchase. You can hire people to come in if they need help with bathing, meds, etc., but it's strictly independent living.

It is inexpensive. Everybody there is very nice and very helpful. The food is excellent. The rooms are small with just a bedroom, a bath, and a closet, but it's very nice. The room goes directly outside and you walk on covered sidewalks to the dining room, laundry, the living room or sitting rooms.
