Durand Senior Care & Rehab Center's physical therapy department is really good. When I was there on Saturday, they had one occupational therapist and two different physical therapists come in and work with my mom. For a Saturday, that was pretty impressive. Although our first week was a really bad experience (their staff sent her with just her hospital gown in the middle of winter with her coat and no shoes), overall they're OK. They have wine and cheese parties, bingo, morning coffee gatherings, something called 'booze and tattoos' where they put these little water soluble tattoos on them and a wine that they serve. They also have crafts and a beauty salon. Then they hand out paper with all of the activities that are going on every morning. She's been visited by the dietician, too. In just a week, she's getting up in her wheelchair now and going into the bathroom to use the toilet. They're very understanding, and I really enjoyed the physical therapy department.

I was at Durand Senior Care and Rehab center. Also, I had a previous accident four years ago where I fell and shattered my hip and femur, and this time it is just my leg and knee, so that's where they had me do the rehabilitation. The physical therapy was wonderful. The occupational therapy gal was wonderful, too. I'm 5 feett 8 inches, and she was just two inches taller than me, and she didn't baby me or pamper me. She said, "There isn't any reason you can't wheel yourself back to your room. You don't need to have somebody do that for you. You're strong," and I was like, "OK." She was very good. She was encouraging all along on that, but she wasn't browbeating me or anything.
If somebody has had some problems physically, whatever the situation, it's excellent as far as their occupational and physical therapy are concerned. The people there are great. They encourage you and they're very punctual. When they say they're going to be there, they're there, and they work with you every day and such. I can't say enough good about that. But the things that I didn't like, I thought they had two people to a room, a very small room, and then they never had any phones in the rooms, and everybody had to have a cell phone. I asked about that, "Don't you have land phones?" And they said, "Well, this is what people want." And I said, "Well, there's a gentleman over there in the dining room that's eating without utensils, and you're telling me he wants a cell phone?" I said, I don't think so. I did not like that. And the doctor that they had there was very aggressive and assertive, and he had me on this fluid pill, and it was really, really strong. I said I've got to have a less potent pill so I can get up out of this bed, because the longer I stay in the bed, the weaker I'm going to get. I said I want to go through rehab, and I want to get better so I can go home, and he didn't like that.
The facility itself is very nice for the most part, but they have two people to a room, a very small room. If you have somebody else who is kind of in your situation, it's not bad. They put a woman in there right before I left, and she thought the closet was a means to getting out of there, and she kept going on and on about what a bad guy her husband was. She said a lot of profanity. Finally, I went up to the desk and said, "I can't do this. You guys have been trying to quiet her down and she's not going to quiet down. I cannot go to sleep tonight with her." They were very nice about this and so they found someplace else to put her. They acted on that problem right away. Another thing is I'm diabetic, and they keep bringing me dinners with chocolate, peanut butter pie. Everybody, for the most part, was really nice. It's just the fact that some of the people that were supposed to be doing their jobs really weren't.

Upon arrival there was hardly any staff and only 1 nurse & 2 CNAs to cover the entire wing that my family member was a patient on. It appears that the patient was given 1 cup of water for the entire day which she needs assistance to drink. She appears to be dehydrated and confused. Staff did nothing to address. I recommended APS be contacted as there appears to be possible deglect due to facility being so understaffed.

Durand Senior Care was really nice. It seemed really clean, they were very attentive to the patients, and very nice and helpful. They know their patients by name.

Durand Senior Care was close to my home. It was equal to the other facility I visited in every way except that the rooms were a little bit smaller. The activities were also the same. The only thing that I would prefer was for it to have larger rooms. They were pretty old, but well maintained, and they were making updates indoors. What impressed me with this facility was that they had about 85% to 90% success rate in sending their rehab patients home.

The Durand convalescent center was a very good facility. There were 2 decent-sized cafeterias that served a variety of foods and were designed specifically to each persons needs. The staff was very caring and also seemed to enjoy our caroling every time we went there. All of the elderly folk would join in on our christmas songs. The place had a good spirit about it. There were around fifty different rooms at the facility. They did lack the decor of a high scale facility but the rooms were all of decent size. The hallways were spacious enough for two or three wheelchairs to be pushed along side each other. This made it easier for the elder folk to converse with each other as we took them from room to room for different activities. There was a large room with a piano and some other musical instruments for people to play on and there was also a karaoke machine for those that enjoyed singing.

My mother has been in facility for 2 years and if you do not watch closely they are careless in the attention given to patients. The crn's are non chalet and do not get personally involved with the patients. Basically it is clean, but too little help
