About This Community

New Friends, managed by Vibrant Life Communities, offers an entirely new approach to assisted living, memory support and dementia care.

Simply, we don’t change the way we treat someone just because they may have changed. In fact, we change. In our Vibrant Life philosophy, we passionately believe each person can continue having a life and remain vibrant – despite changes in a person’s physical or cognitive needs. The professional care and support we provide becomes more of a background in their lives rather than the main focus. That’s why we like to call what we do “LIVING with assistance.”

We do this by creating a living plan for each person and their family, based on their needs, desires and strengths. At New Friends, people live in their own suites in one of our three comfortable and inviting lodges, with warm wood tones, big screen TVs and even a café. With music of their era playing in one room, the big game on in another, and fresh coffee brewing, New Friends is more like your favorite local coffeehouse. No scrubs, no nurse’s stations, no sterile environment. We have created a place the whole family wants to come to.

I toured Vibrant Life Senior Living, New Friends-Kalamazoo. They were very thorough, very friendly, and very encouraging. The facilities were well kept up, very efficient and appealing. They provide activities, so they have an activity coordinator. Outdoors, they have some gazebo-like settings for outdoor activities.

I liked the fact that Vibrant Life Senior Living, New Friends-Kalamazoo was broken up into different homes/cottages. I think they have no more than 18 to 24 people per home and everyone has a private room, which is nice. However, only less than 50 percent of the employees had been tested for COVID, and for us, that was a big thing. The shower also had a big lip that you had to step over to get in, and that's one of the major issues we have since my mother-in-law is a fall risk, but it was a nice unit. There were sections where a lot of things were piled up, like the little rec room area, it could have been more organized. The gentleman that gave me the tour though was fine. He did very well.

My wife is in New Friends Community right now, and they've been very good to her. It has three lodges, and she's in lodge two, which is not for the worse-off residents. She likes it. The staff is very good and interacts very well with the residents. It doesn't feel like a hospital, although they take care of all of them. They're very kind and very responsive. She has a private room. They have plenty of activities and I attended an event where the residents were making their own art. They're always watching movies in the evening, and they have flower arrangements. She has physical and occupational therapy, and the physical therapy certainly helped her out. The food is pretty good.

New Friends is exceptional. They’re very good, and they keep the residents active and hydrated. The staff that toured us knew everybody in the building. The rooms are great. They have private rooms too, and they’re very nice. They have a beautiful library, and they’ve got arts and crafts. The lodges are homey, but still compact.
