75 State Street is an older community. They have done well with what they've got, but it was very choppy, just very difficult to learn your way around and the population seemed to be much older and less active. The room had a small kitchenette. They had a very small outdoor area. The staff seemed very nice.

I went to 75 State Street twice. I know someone who lives there. He has some definite memory issues, but he's still in independent living. They do allow them to stay for quite a while, so you can stay on independent level living, and you would pay extra for the care.
The first time I went, I had the tour. After the tour was over, I went and visited my friend in his apartment. The second time, I went with my other friend. I did see my friend who I visited the first time in the dining room, but I just went over and said hi.
The staff was excellent, and she greeted the residents by names when we met people. They have exercise classes. They have music, and they have raised gardens. People could be involved in gardening. They have a small chapel, and they do have a library. It was a very well done tour, but the other thing that bugs me (which I told them) is that my friend lives on the fifth floor. When I was there the first time, I knocked on his door and he didn't hear me. Then I called him, and it woke him up. I had to wait for him to get dressed. Their fifth floor has been waiting for furniture, which I understand that things are backed up. There was a table in the big common area, but no chairs; there was no place for me to sit and wait and there was no option. There was no place for people on that floor to sit together and visit, or visit if they had a friend and wanted to spread out. That was in October. When I went back in December, the table was gone and there were still no chairs. I did say to her that that bothered me because I felt like that was something that was missing. Even if it was just folding chairs, there should be a place for people to sit down and visit with each other. It's pleasant and actually appealed to my friend because it's a little bit different.
The rooms are at different angles. It's not boxy, so she likes that. One of the apartments we looked at had its own washer and dryer, and it had a huge kitchen. The rooms vary quite a bit.

We visited friends at Seventy-Five State Street, and their apartment was very nice. They looked like they were well taken care of, and they really enjoyed their apartment. It was spacious, and they had two bedrooms, a dining area, and a living room. They also participated in the meal plan, and actually we shared a meal with them. We had Sunday dinner with them, and it was surprisingly good. The staff in the dining room was very good, friendly, helpful, and courteous. It looked well maintained, and I thought it was reasonable.

I was impressed with the thoroughness and the openness of the people that I worked with at Seventy-Five State Street, particularly the director of admissions, but they don't have a lot of vacancies. I saw three units and they were all one-bedrooms and I liked them. I was very much impressed with what they had. They offer three meals and access to various institutions. You're not far from the art museum, St. Luke's Cathedral, a lot of things that go on downtown, the Portland Stage, and the historical society. I also liked the lovely gardens they had, particularly the environment created by the Rose Garden downstairs. I also appreciated the attention I got while I was there.

The staff from Seventy Five State Street was fine, but the place was not really to our liking. It was a little dark, old, and not very up to date, so we decided we wouldn’t be interested in it at all. The apartments were a pretty good size but not lit up. We had lunch in the dining room, and the food was fine. There weren't any activities going on at the time.
