Son of an Active Parent

My father was a resident at PCAL. He enjoyed the smoking area with the canopy sides and roof that was installed. He also enjoyed being near the bus line and right in-town as he liked to go out into the community. It has a nice area to go sit outside in the nicer weather including a gazebo. Also enjoyed trips to different restaurants on the mini bus.

As a neighbors we have asked that the facility move there smoking area to another location the smoke is constant 5am_11pm. We were told they would not be allowing smoking but it has increased in the past year.. They choose not to utilize areas where the neighbors would benefit.. They certainly don't have the people living there's best interest in mind.. I'm sure if your reading this you should question the level of quality care your Loved one might not receive if a facility chooses not to work with there neighbors...

I had read the reviews before I toured with my mother and was honestly expecting the worst. I have to say that I was very impressed! The Portland Center was very clean and a number of the residents stopped to talk with my mother as they recognized her from elderly apartments. There was choir practice going on in one room and Bingo in another room. I looked in a few rooms and though clean and neat, the shared rooms are livable but small. They did have some construction going on during our visit, but we were told ahead of time what to expect. My mother decided that she's not ready for facility living, but we would probably choose Portland Center when she's ready. Thank you.

My mother wanted to be in this facility as she new someone there that she grew up with. Following through with her wishes and worried about many bad reviews we went ahead with moving in. I also have many concerns with nursing care not returning ph calls and you cant get though often at many times.my family is very appreciated of the activity dept.as they have a wide variety of option for many diff. Residents. I had on different occassion seen how happy the residents are with the activity girl. The comfort, energy, and happiness shows she loves her job. My mother has changed for the better please have staff follow her good example

I found the staff in the memory loss department very hard to work with. While visiting my mother witnessed on several occasions the caretakers yelling at the patients. My mother was in dirty clothes alot and often her hair was in need of washing. Trying to reach someone on the phone was nearly impossible, they often ignored dr and family wishes. My family interacted and visited my mom often but was not informed of issues such as infections ets, as they aroused.Had to move her for medical reasons but glad she is closer so we can keep an eye on her. Also alot of her stuff went missing which isnt unusual in memory loss areas, but the nurses tok patients into other patients bathrooms as a convience to them and left them, opening up the opertunatity for someone to walk off with another patients personal belongings. Left alot on the cleanleness scale also

This center has issues with bed bugs- I found one myself in mothers room. When mother has issues that need followup care the staff has to be baby sat to get things done. Very hard to get a live person on nurse staff to be on phone when needed. Resident doctor does not always check ears and found that when asked to do so did not find that mother had large amt of wax buildup until went to audiologist for hearing aid test and mold. Went twice to audiologist appt to have to be sent back for futher ear wax treatment since it was not done satisfactorily.Mother is still living here but there are not many options unfortunately.Mother has been back and forth with health issues to rehab and now has fallen and fractured hip. Not enough staff for all of these residents to be watched carefully enough.

The facilities are relatively clean - sometimes the common spaces are a little messy. The staff is friendly for the most part, there are a few orderlies that seem really snotty but the nursing staff is caring and compassionate. Calling to try to reach a resident on the telephone (whether private phone in room or common line or via staff) has always been very challenging for me.
