About This Community

Welcome to Thornton Oaks retirement community in Brunswick, Maine, a town cited twice by Money magazine as one of the top communities in the U.S. in which to retire. Brunswick is the gateway to Maine?s Mid Coast region and sits on the northern rim of Casco Bay.

Life at Thornton Oaks is as varied and diverse as our residents, who are instrumental in planning and shaping community events. The calendar is filled with daily activities, from book groups and bridge parties to foreign affairs lectures and flower arranging. The Thornton Oaks shuttle bus makes frequent trips to the Bowdoin College pool and local shopping centers, as well as cultural excursions to Portland and Boston.

Ours is a friendly and welcoming community. Residents find it easy to connect with others who share similar interests and many tell us that they have never been as social as they find themselves now, in retirement.

Thornton Oaks Retirement is a lovely place that's very welcoming. It has cottages and apartments. We felt very comfortable there, everything was very clean and nicely kept up, and we like how they handled COVID. The staff who gave the tour was very welcoming, answered all our questions, and took the time to be with us. The upkeep of the place is very good and it all looked very good.

I had checked out Thornton Oaks. They have a lot to offer, and they have an elegant dining room. I have friends that do live there, and they invited me for dinner this past year. Very elegant, nice food, nice conversations and they have a great setup as well. The food and the service were terrific. The dining room was spacious and very nice, and the people wore shirts, ties, and jackets. My friend has a spacious and well laid out apartment. She has a nice window view on the ground floor. They have a lot of walking paths. The friendliness, the pleasantness, and attractiveness stand out. I really think that it serves the purpose, and it’s a very nice place.

I visited there several times before my mother moved to her apartment. I was impressed by the grounds, the staff, the preparation and thought about increasing needs for assistance by residents, the social services, the activities and community involvement, the apartments and medical care, the staff, and the food. I was so impressed I considered putting my own name on the waiting list for when I met the minimum age requirement.
