About This Community

There is an alternative to “nursing homes,” and to large “assisted living” facilities, for yourself or your loved one!

Many seniors simply do not want or need a nursing staff in their place of residence, preferring the now well known advantages of assisted living. What’s new, however, is the concept of irresistibly small assisted living locations, called “Residential Care Homes”—normal suburban houses transformed into comfortable and totally accessible assisted living homes—where surprisingly small numbers of residents and their caregivers quickly become best of friends.

Imagine a licensed assisted living facility in a suburban house whose appearance is that of a single-family residence, and whose interior offers the appearance and comforts of a family home, but whose “family” is a group of senior citizens who wish to avoid more crowded conditions but also wish to escape the isolation and expense of home care. Our “Residential Care Homes” offer a quantum leap in the individual attention and affection residents receive, not to mention the emotional comfort they derive from such cozy homelike settings.

In each of our four Academy House locations, friends converge three times a day around a family-style dining table and, most other times, can be found in the den in their favorite chairs for snacks, music and conversation. The comfortable bedrooms are just a few steps away, but the vast majority prefer the company of their friends in the indoor and outdoor common areas.

My mother has been in Academy House for three years now. It's very good. Her room is very lovely and I think she's comfortable there. They have been very caring. It's a group home and she enjoys the meals. Now with Covid, things are a little different. They are having people come in and play music. Family members are usually welcome to visit. I'm very thankful we have found it. It has been wonderful for our family and for my mother, of course.

The Harvard House property, rooms, furnishings and atmosphere are truly a suburban home, including the very pleasant aromas of meals being freshly prepared by a caregiver and the activities available to the residents. The term Residential Care Home is very appropriate. The director, manager and staff are always accessible and extremely helpful with any issue that may arise with only a small amount of residents in their care. Even though Harvard House is an assisted living home, visiting nurses, physicians and finally hospice care is also available. Prescriptions and supplies can be delivered directly to the home. This model of assisted living is far superior than the larger facilities I previously experienced and at an affordable cost. It's difficult to make the decision to enter assisted living, yet Peggy and her staff make it as easy as possible. Go see for yourself and you will be happy you did.

My mother has been in Academy House for three years now. It's very good. Since it's a small residential home, the level of care just depends on the ladies. Two are wheelchair bound, one of which is my mother, and then the other three use walkers. So my mother and the other lady in a wheelchair need the most help getting around transitioning. My mother is very comfortable there. It's a really good place and it's more like a home. The turnover is a lot less than other places. The food is fine. My mother is a picky eater, but I'll bring some things for her. She takes all of her meals with the other ladies and she eats something, but she is very picky. It's not their fault. They have someone that comes in and sings from time to time, but that is a lot less now that Covid has happened. The ladies aren't into bingo or anything like that, but they have a recreational room with TV and recliners for all the ladies to enjoy. However my mother is anti-social and she doesn't like to get out of her room. Again, that's not the fault of the facility, that's just her personality. The food is really good. Sometimes, I wish I was eating there instead of in my home. The food is good, the facility is great and I'm paying less for better care.
