My 94 year old mother was recently in rehab at Warren Barr Lieberman Skokie following surgery for a broken elbow, broken vertebrae and Covid. The care, if you can call it that, was untenable. The first morning she was there the aide came in her room & cranked up the back of her bed. My mother was in agony from the broken vertebrae, asked her to stop and she wouldn’t respond or stop. My mother would need to use the restroom and would wait an hour and a half before an aide would show up. She would have a mess in her diaper, tell the aide when she finally showed up and the aide just walked out and did not come back. Another time she called to be cleaned up as she had another mess in her diaper. Her breakfast was there and they told her she had to eat her breakfast first before they would clean her up. They left her sitting in a messed diaper. The physical therapist had come into the room a bit later and was the one that cleaned her up. How can you hire people who don’t care about the way they treat the patients they are hired to care for? We had to hire a private caretaker to be there, which we should not have had to do. After 5 days, which was the soonest we could move her due to her positive Covid test, we transferred her to another facility where the care was exemplary, which is what should be expected. Not the disregard of the patient’s well-being, as was exhibited prior to her being transferred.

My mother-in-law is now in Warren Barr Lieberman. The reason why we choose them is because they are taking Medicaid and public aids. They have Russian-speaking nurses, and my mother-in-law is Russian speaking. They have a Russian program. My mother-in-law is also Jewish, and they have Jewish traditions. This is a Jewish nursing home. And if you want, you can order kosher food. She's not kosher, but for people who have one kosher food, they can provide. They even have a Russian TV, so this kind of works out for us because we are not paying anything for that nursing home. Everything is paid.
Three times a day, they have a meal. They have a fridge. Each person lives in a separate room, so that's one room for one person. They are taking my mother-in-law two times a week for showers, they have a big screen TV, they have a nice variety of different kinds of books, like a library outside, and they have a like banquet hall. You can use that banquet hall on the first floor. They also have nurses, and they are checking blood pressure every morning. The staff are doing a really good job. I didn't taste the food, but my mother-in-law says it's very good. She is not complaining about the food, and there is a lot of variety like meat, some fruits, and some desserts sometimes. It actually depends on the meal plan because every person, when they come in, they have their own meal plan. For example, some people need to have only soft food, some people can have vegetarian, and some people can have only kosher foods.

My sister is in Warren Barr Lieberman. They're short-staffed and they don't pay as much attention as they need to. You have some good nurses, but being short-staffed, they are not as available. There's not enough staff to accommodate the residents in a timely manner. She's not satisfied, but overall, cleanliness, not smelling urine, stuff like that, it's good. They need to improve on their staff and some of the nurses. Some of them are not friendly. They don't talk to the residents with compassion. She has some nurses that do, and some that don't and that's the one with the call button. It's the way they talk to the residents. They have activities in the book, but she hasn't been able to go to any of them. She does right now have the therapist that comes into the room to start her on a plan, and that's good. Some of the things that she needed, they expedited pretty quickly in the therapy department. They take out the garbage and stuff; they're pretty good on that. They keep it clean.

I have visited my friend here and the place was horrible to the point that I assisted my friend in finding a better place to go to within a month of her staying there. It was smelly, no one assisted her with anything and when we asked why no one came in the nurse said that she never called for help. The people were just unpleasant and unhelpful. They seemed rushed and overworked everyone looked tired and mad. The rooms were ok it has its own bathroom, that’s all I can say

My mother in law was a patient there for 60 days.
The rooms are all private, but small. I could not imagine living in a room like they have, it looks nothing like home.
The place feels like a hospital with very generic colors.
The staff did not seem to be caring. It looked like they were just passing time, and not really interested in residents. The residents calls were not answered promptly. My father in law paid extra money to CNAs for duties that are part of their jobs.
The food was terrible, lots of starches.
It might be ok to stay there for a very short time. Otherwise it is not a life to be there long term.

Lieberman Center seemed alright. The room is decent. The dining room was nice and the food seems decent, there was wait staff that was very attentive. They tried to give it more of a restaurant like atmosphere. I didn’t really observe any activities, but the first time I visited there was like a piano concert going on. My aunt mentioned to me that she had played bingo. It was clean; there wasn’t anything that was disgusting.

The Lieberman Center had programs for the residents like excursions. They had a dining room and those residents who were not able to dine there, the staff would actually bring their food to their rooms. They had a garden area with a patio. The staff we met at the admission was very helpful. Their rooms each had its own bathroom. The building would need a bit of updating and their activity room wasn't really that inviting and it would be better if it would be better situated and to be more user friendly.

Like many assisted living and nursing facilities, Lieberman Center for Health & Rehabilitation did not look particularly homey and inviting, but for the sake of ease and sanitation that is entirely understandable. It did not look as stark as a hospital, it was just clearly not a hotel-- which, of course, it isn't. Otherwise, I thought the nurses were generally very friendly and helpful, and the amenities were good. While visiting my grandfather he seemed pleased enough with his room, and it looked like he had everything he needed, along with a relatively large TV. I didn't try any of the food, but from what I saw it looked just fine. There were many nice activities available every day: movies to watch, sometimes music to listen to, just ways to pleasantly pass time. There are also daily Jewish religious services. As a particular treat, I appreciated the bird who lived in the hallway-- it was a nice, cheery touch.

The staffs seemed really nice and are always ready to answer any questions I have about the program and how the residents are being treated. The facilities are really nice. Each resident gets his or her own room, and it is quite spacious. Residents and their families can also bring in their own furniture to make it feel like home. The food here is great. The only downside (or upside for some people) is that they follow Kosher when it comes to food and meals. Residents get to take a bath once per day, while being assisted by the staffs. Also, there are many different activities that the residents can choose to engage in like drawing, singing, watching a movie together or playing bingo. My grandmother seemed a lot happier here than when she was living at home alone. It is also safer now since there are people watching over her. It seems like being surrounded with other seniors can be really positive on my grandmother. Also, despite what you have seen in the movies or any misgivings you may have about assisted living facilities or nursing homes, Lieberman is a great place. If I was old and unable to live on my own, I would want to stay here.
