We toured American House Cedarlake looking for independent living for myself and my husband followed up by possible care for my friend. I think we spent more time at the assisted living side because we were shown all the different things that they do there, all the meals that were served, and the fact that there was medical attention in the place. My friend needs that stuff more at this point than my husband or I do. The facility is very nice, clean, and welcoming. The studio apartment we saw was extremely small but the 1-bedroom is doable. We didn't go into a 2-bedroom. The person who assisted us was excellent. She explained everything more than we could even think about asking. The dining area was very large. There were several people there because we were there at lunchtime and everyone seemed to be very pleased with what they were eating. We didn't see any activities but we were shown different rooms where people would do different things. There were machines that you could use and rooms to play bingo or whatever.

We were very impressed with American House Cedarlake. We were hoping that's where my mother-in-law was going to go. We met with the director and she showed us all the different apartments. She took a lot of time with us and we talked about my mother-in-law having some problems walking. She took into account that my mother-in-law would have some mobility issues and was looking for an apartment closer to an elevator, so I thought they were very caring and listened to what you had to say, and work with you. The apartments were very nice. We saw an efficiency studio type thing to a two-bedroom. She showed us all of it. They had washers and dryers in the unit. She showed us there was a little recreation area on each floor. It was well appointed to keep them engaged. When we got there the first time we visited, they were playing bingo, and we saw an area where they were putting together a puzzle. There was a lot of interaction with the residents there. They were very accommodating to us.

We got to visit American House Cedarlake. The tour was very informative. The girl who gave us the tour was very helpful. She even recommended that we personally check with the VA to see if my dad is eligible for VA assistance. The room we saw was quite spacious. We looked at the bigger of the one-bedroom studios where they had a wall that divides the living room and the bedroom. It was good because I figured he could fit in there easily. They have underground parking there, so my father can bring his vehicle, and they also have a woodworking shop that he's interested in doing. We are leaning more toward this place because of these two things.

We chose American House Cedarlake because it is close to my house. The facility looks very nice and clean, and the residents seem very happy there. The apartments are fantastic, really beautiful, very well-maintained, and very clean. Everything is very good. They do arts and crafts, have bingo, all kinds of board games, and card games. The staff is great. They have a calendar of activities with something going on every day. The dining area is very clean and my mom never complained about the food. I am just a little disappointed that it’s all privately paid; it’s costing me $5,000 a month for my mom to stay there. Nothing is covered by her Medicare or Medicaid.
