We went to Oak Park Arms, and we looked at independent living for my brother. The overall experience was fine, but they were a little disorganized. They couldn't give me a sheet with all their costs on it. They just gave us the major cost for the room and what was included in independent living. When I asked for extra services that might be added, they did not have a sheet to give me to reference later. The rooms were nicely furnished, and the furniture is part of the room rent. You don't have to bring your own furniture in. They were single rooms. Some rooms had kitchen facilities. One had a small wall of kitchen facilities, and another room with nothing more than a dorm sort of a refrigerator. I was surprised that they did not have handicapped accessible step-in showers. You had to step in over a tub. There were plenty of bars and stuff, but that is quite a step for some people. The staff during the tour was quite good. She was very helpful when I have asked additional questions. There was nothing special there that I would recommend. They had a list of things like trips to the local grocery stores and things like that. I liked its proximity to family. It was right in the middle of Oak Park. It is a neighborhood my brother recognizes at this point, and it's walking distance to family. The dining area was set up to be flexible, and it could feel very intimate. I'm concerned about the placement because it doesn't have memory care associated with it. I'm not sure how far off we are from that, and moving people who need memory care can be difficult. The facility was very clean, but I spotted maintenance issues that I thought weren't up to snuff. The inside of an elevator had a metal door that was really knocked up. The edges of it were rough, and there were a lot of dents on it. The main social floor had one set of stairs with a built-in ramp that had to be activated, taken down from the wall, and laid down. It looked like an electrical activation, and it wasn't clear to me that my brother would be able to figure out how to use those.

I'm disappointed with Oak Park Arms. It is located in a rehabbed hotel. There are a number of stairs in this place. Even though there are lifts available, they are disabled. The size of the room was OK, but the layout wasn't very good. The space felt a little dark. Also the staff members seemed to not really be interested in showing us around the place.

I chose to move into Oak Park Arms independent living because it’s very clean, the furnished unit I’m in is wonderful, and the food is great. They have very good food and good service. The staff knows everybody by name, that’s what prompted me to go here instead of in other communities. They have concerts at least once a week, we have piano players, bingo, exercises every day, weaving, ceramics, painting, woodwork, you name it they have it here. I’m sure there are some places that are better, but I’m very happy here. The place is old, that’s the only problem with it but otherwise it’s fine.

We toured Oak Park Arms, we were so impressed with it, mom felt comfortable there, and she’s now living there. They were very accommodating and we were very happy. They were willing to paint the walls the color my mother wanted, and we didn’t have to bring all of her furniture. They provide three meals a day if she wants it, they provide housekeeping, and they have 350 activities that she can participate in a month. The rent is inclusive of utilities, and it was a perfect fit for her.

I visited Oak Park Arms. The apartments were a little small. They had bingo, groups playing cards, a bus that comes and takes people places, and a library. The staff was very friendly and very helpful.

Oak Park Arms was very nice, there’s a lot to do, and the people seemed to be active and enjoyed where they were. The location is one that is stimulating, and the area that it’s in is family oriented. They have Bingo room, a place to rest in a rocking chair, discussions, and bible study. I saw the adult day care room, and I was considering using that. The dining area was excellent, and it seemed like you were visiting a restaurant. It had a nice decorum and was comfortable. The staff was very attentive and seemed to like what they were doing in terms of working with the elderly.

We were pleased with Oak Park Arms; my mother was there five years ago before she went to another residential placement. They had very good programming, had very open administration, and did a lot with the community.

Oak Park Arms was small and didn't have enough activities. The rooms were small and need to be updated. They’ve got an auditorium for events, a computer room, and a library.

I moved into Oak Park Arms. The staff make the place feel like home. The people are very friendly, and the place is clean. They have different rooms to accommodate the different needs of the residents. The food is good, and we have activities every day; right now, we will go dancing in the ballroom.

Oak Park Arms was obviously a very old structure, and it didn't look that clean. It has the original doors and the original wood trim baseboards. It's been scratched over the decades and repainted. We ate there, and it wasn't very good. We saw a couple of units in the independent living area, but the particular units that were available were so far from the elevator. It was a really long walk, and my father-in-law has a lot of trouble walking, even with a walker. They have activities there. They have a ballroom, and they go together for activities in the ballroom.
