To us at Parkway Gardens in Fairview Heights, Illinois, assisted living means two things: you do the living and we help you live. Our personal assistants provide what you need when you need it. At The Arbors at Parkway Gardens, living with Alzheimer's becomes less of a challenge for you and your loved one. We combine the intimacy of assisted living with specialized care for dementia. The size of the Arbors promotes a comforting, calming environment. With no more than 15 rooms, the Arbors co-exists with a sister assisted living facility, yet remains separate. Care is provided in a building specifically designed with the care of the Alzheimer's resident in mind. We consider each resident's own strengths and weaknesses to weave a seamless cloth of individualized care. We also incorporate the latest approaches to this challenging disease into the daily routines and activities of all our residents. It's difficult to even search for proper care while tending to someone with Alzheimer's. Each day presents new challenges to patients and their caregivers. At the Arbors we offer a shelter of care and advice for the entire family.

My mom was at Parkway Gardens. They have very caring staff. They got along very well with my mom and she with them. They provided activities, which she participated in, which were good because they got her out of her room. Even though sometimes she didn't want to, they encouraged her to participate in the activities, which was also good. They kept her room clean. She was in a room by herself. She had a TV, a telephone, a microwave, and a small fridge. It was nice. They had a dining area and an exercise area as well. The place was very clean. They were a very caring staff. When she had to go from assisted living to skilled nursing, we were disappointed. She had a severe memory problem and she was finally getting sort of adjusted there, and it was very disappointing because the staff were very good to her.

My mother is in assisted living at Parkway Gardens Senior Living. They have a very nice facility. They have the assisted living building in the front, and Arbors memory care (which is a separate building) in the back. They have all the amenities and really nice rooms. Our biggest problem with them was their inability to follow through with a lot of things that they say they were going to do. They were having a lot of trouble with keeping employees. In the last month, it has changed to new management and the facility itself. Things are running a lot better. They're still working out the bugs, and they just started up activities again.

My mom is at Parkway Gardens. It has been an adjustment, but I think that adjustment is primarily because she didn't want to have to go into assisted living, and because she liked the place where she was living. It's a fine place given what she can afford, but I just think that she is not going to be happy, no matter where she is. She doesn't like the food but she has a physical condition that makes it really hard for her to eat. Food is about average and nothing special. It's a really nice facility, and it is also very small, which is part of the reason why we chose it. They have activities but she does not participate. She is also legally blind, and so she doesn't like to go to those.

Parkway Gardens was a super nice facility and very accommodating because they don't have a set time to eat. It's an open dining room. We looked at an alcove. They have a smaller amount of space for each of the rooms. The room we saw had a very large walkway closet and bathroom facilities that looked super nice, complete with ADA requirements like the grab bars, and a nice space for a wheelchair. The facilitator was super nice when showing us the facility. There are only 20 people at the facility, so it's really small. They also have an Alzheimer's/memory care unit that's directly behind them, and that's what we were also looking for. We wanted a place for my mom in case her memory changed, so it wouldn't be hard for her to move from one place to another. We were also looking at any place that would accept her dog, and this facility is pet friendly. I also like the staff, and there is a nurse on-call at all times. I don't think Mom needs that, but if she had changed in perception -- like if she couldn't take her own meds or if it got overwhelming -- I would've picked Parkway Gardens because of the nursing part of it. If you have problems knowing what food is called off of a menu, they will bring you out plates that covered in plastic to look at. They give you a choice through visuals instead of just words. It works really well for people who have lost their speech. The building, cleanliness, and supportive care like housekeeping are definitely a five, but the space itself seemed small.

My client resided at Parkway Gardens and then transitioned to the Arbors, the memory assisted part of the community as her dementia progressed. The staff was very helpful with the transition and provided compassionate care to her for 3 years. I would recommend this community to others with a dementia diagnosis as they were able to get to know her and her needs as her dementia progressed. They provided peace of mind knowing that she could stay in the community as her needs progressed.

I liked Parkway Gardens very much. It's a very nice facility. The staff is very nice, friendly, and very accommodating. The dining room is right in the front. It's small but very nice and clean. My parents would have been very pleased with it. That's all I was looking for: comfortable and clean. It's a small facility, but small is not bad because I think they would get good care there, though it's hard to tell from one visit. It's definitely worth looking at.

Parkway Gardens was a very upscale, very nice environment. The director was extremely good at what she did, and she just really connected. She invited us to bring my father back. We viewed it first without him, and then the director invited us to bring him back and have lunch. She did eat with us, and the staff connected with him. She really made it feel like a family environment. They have some senior activities. It's a small community with only 28 residents. We like a small community better. It's very close to us and close to a nursing home.
