My mom has only been in Highland Health Care Center for a week now, and so far so good. She's gotten her medication on time; when she needed something to change, they were pretty quick about that. They got her a new bigger bed. Then when she needed a recliner, they got her a recliner. Also, they're doing really well with the COVID situation. She's in the rehab part, and she's doing pretty well. It's just an older building.

The food is very flavorful-no complaints on the quality of the meals. Some rooms are bigger than others-mine was spacious w/ an attached bathroom. I know there are different size rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The activities director handed out games and puzzles, etc. at holiday time, as well as passed out snacks to the residents. My husband is still there now and the staff has a very good way of interacting w/ him, esp. if he gets grumpy w/ them.

I give this facility a one and thats even over rated. The day I got here I asked if I could have help puting my clothes away and that never happened. I ended ul having to try and walk by myself to do it. The second day my room mate paged the staff and it was literally 3 to 4 hours before we were checked on. One of the workers said since I wasn't laying flat on my back I was not hurting. They refused to change my ostomy bag when it was time without me throwing a fit. The suppse to to change my dressings 2x daily and yesterday she didn't feel like it so it only got done at bedtime. Today I had to to keep griping for them to change my dressing when my poop was leaking into the wound. I already been to hospital once for infection in it. They were giving me all my night time meds but my seizure because they didn't feel like having to get in the other cart for one med. The room was dirty and stunk really bad. No one ever came and cleaned our toilet. Just emptied trash.

The rooms of Highland Health Care are good. My parents-in-law are both in the same room with two beds and plenty of room for their personal stuff. We’ve only been up there once, and it has been good. They have bingo, crafts, and plenty of stuff to keep them busy. The in-laws participate, so it’s good for them. From the feedback that we get from family members and our parents, I’d give them a 4. We wanted to put them somewhere where they could stay together, and that is what they provided. It has been great. If I need anything, I call, and they are right on top of it.

On a scale of 1-10 I would say my overall rate of satisfaction was slightly on the high side of five. My grandmother lived in the nursing facility, and while I never felt that the care given was substandard, I felt that there were many aspects of the facility management that was. Perhaps the home was understaffed, but when trying to reach someone on the phone, it was nearly impossible. As I lived across the country, I made weekly phone calls in lieu of visits. The residents, for understandable reasons, did not have phone service in the rooms. However, the overall customer service of getting the phone to the resident was quite low. Many times I had to hang up in frustration. This caused me much grief as well as aggravation for my grandmother. People who live in these facilities are often left to feel abandoned, but that was not the case in this instance. My family visited regularly and tried to keep close communication. However, the procedures and policies of the facility were neither helpful nor accommodating. This may seem petty in the grand scheme of things, but sometimes something as a simple phone call to say hello and I'm thinking about you can make an enormous difference in the life of someone in an assisted living facility. When the staff does not prioritize or value these outreaches, the resident's quality of life suffers greatly.
