My mom is in a place called Lutheran Homes - King's Gardens Campus in Perry. She's in nursing care. It is a wonderful facility staffed by extremely loving and caring people. They have done a remarkable job of turning my mother's health around. She is feeling so much better since she moved in about 4 weeks ago now. I can't speak highly enough of this community. They do bingo, and arts and crafts. They have performers come in and have musical events. They're integrated with a daycare center so the residents can interact with the children at the daycare center and read to the kids. There are just a lot of different things that they do for their residents. They have a lot of specially built areas for their memory care patients, including a garden where they can plant. They have an auto shop area where the men can tinker with cars and engines. They have a simulated driving area, a movie area, a general rec room with a beautiful bird cage with lots of birds, and then an outdoor patio that's shaded with lots of picnic tables so they can enjoy being outside. There are lots of different spaces for them.

The pandemic has caused additional concerns for staff, residents, and visitors. From my observation all three groups are working together. It is not without incidents, but they have been addressed rapidly. As a visitor it was not excited that we could not visit face to face. I did and continue to understand that you are doing the best for all concerned. In this opening up of scheduled visitation, I believe you are handling this excellently. I have been able to get in with a few days notice. You provide outdoor locations that I know my cousin greatly appreciates. On my 3 visits so far we have been so happy that Jenna was the staff member present. She has added to conversation and humor. Jenna has made the experience even more pleasant. Glad my cousin is at Perry Lutheran Home, Willis Campus. The entire staff has been great!

Finding a home for a senior loved one is never an easy choice. It certainly wasn’t for us! When a fall and surgery dictated a move out of assisted living and into a long-term facility, we had some agonizing conversations about where that facility should be. While Dad was in rehabilitative care at Perry Lutheran Home, we gave consideration to a different facility for reasons involving other family. As we navigated the rehabilitation process, we were more and more impressed with the care he was given at Perry Lutheran Home and the way in which he “fit” into their way of doing things. In short, he was very well cared for, and he was completely happy there! So, we decided that making a move was not in his best interests. What we didn’t know was what was around the corner for us! As the threat of the virus became apparent, we prayed that PLH would take the necessary steps to keep Dad and the other residents safe. With all the horror stories about other facilities having so many cases of the virus, we were so grateful that whatever PLH was doing has worked. Their residents have been kept safe! The staff at PLH has been so caring and willing to accommodate our needs. We continue to place our trust in their “process” and take comfort in knowing that Dad is in the best place he could possibly be!

My husband was in the assisted living unit of Perry Lutheran Homes for a very short time. He needed more care than what they could provide, but they had no openings in their memory unit. It was excellent. They tried their hardest, but he didn't want to cooperate. He would go out in the hallways naked, so they didn't really have the staff members in assisted living to handle him. It had handicap features, and all their services and their meals were fantastic. Had stayed at the same level as when he had been interviewed. It would've been a perfect place for him, but his dementia progressed a lot faster than expected. He had a beautiful little apartment with a bedroom, a living room, a nice big bathroom, and a kitchen without a stove. They always came down and invited him to music, and they had cards. The staff was great to work with. The nurse took over his medications, and she would always call me. They had wonderful assisted living. The residents were very nice and seemed very happy to be there. The food was wonderful. It's right next to the hospital. It has a covered alleyway that goes from the assisted living over to the hospital and to the doctors' offices. It was worth the money.

I have been involved at Perry Lutheran Home as a volunteer in all the different care communities. As a former CNA, I can honestly say that this is one of the most impressive assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care communities I've ever seen. Residents are very active in life here from mission projects to worship services to fun activities and programs. The memory care communities of St. James and John's are hands-down the best I've seen. Unique innovations have resulted in the best care environments for those with Alzheimer's or other dementia diseases. One of the most recent innovations that has blessed the entire care community has been the opening of an Intergenerational daycare on-site that allows daily interaction between young and old. Although the outside of the main campus building looks a bit old, what you find inside is a true home filled with caring, compassion, innovation and excellence.
