We have chosen Prairie Hills at Des Moines for my mom. A lot of it has to do with the price; they gave us a bit of a discount. The community is small and homey. Her apartment is right down the hallway, so it is a good location. It's kind of a close-knit community. She has a room that overlooks the court area, which has a beautiful waterfall feature that has some baby ducklings in them. It's quiet. It's kind of off the beaten path. It's right on the edge of the city, but not too far from Des Moines. The staff were very friendly, very helpful, and answered all our questions. We didn't get a chance to try the food, but they had some homemade baked goods that they put out every afternoon.

Prairie Hills Des Moines was very gracious. They gave me plenty of information. I had no trouble with them at all. They showed me a 1-bedroom, which is kind of their demonstration apartment. They had to take me in the back way so that we minimized where we touched and everything, so they were still being quite careful. The staff members were very nice, and I appreciated their help and their frankness. It's a wonderful setting, and they have plenty of mobility in terms of where you can get to your appointment using the buses. It's a little bit out of town so you don't have quite all of the city feel. It's a little bit more country, which I appreciate. However, I was a little confused about which door I was supposed to go to, and if you're going to confuse me, I'm sure you're going to confuse other people.

I thought Prairie Hills Des Moines had a very homey type atmosphere, and had good activities for the people living there. The rooms were set up nicely, I liked the outdoor walkway they had, the landscape, and everything was really nice for my parents. They seemed to be really caring. They had a bag toss baseball, and it turned out they have a league between the homes for that. That’s really cool for the older people to have something like that, a competitive thing, just to show that at those ages they could still have a competition.

I visited Prairie Hills at Des Moines. Everybody was very nice, very helpful, very engaged with all the residents, and very caring. There was so much attention paid to the residents, so everybody was like one big family. I would definitely recommend it. The food was good, it was clean, and there were lots of activities and lots of people participating.

We looked at Prairie Hills. The staff seemed nice enough, and the rooms were a little bit larger, but they didn't have as many activities for my father-in-law. Also the front door didn't have a buzzer, and that their people were further along in dementia or something like that. They have a memory-care unit, but before you got to the memory care, if the dementia was too bad, they had to go find some place else. When I was there, they had some boxes in the hallway, and they were just sitting in the hallways where the residents had to go around it. They did have nice, wide hallways, but I didn't like Prairie Hills as well as the others.
