The nurses and therapists are very patient, take time and try to talk to the patients that have mental issues.
The admintration employee was condescending talking down to people about face shield policy while herself went into patient's rooms without the faceshield herself. Be prepared for that attitude if you go in.

I found Newtown Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Connecticut to be understaffed, poor communicators, difficult to reach via phone, and prone to over-prescribing anti-psychotics. I DO NOT RECOMMEND NEWTOWN and suggest that you choose a different facility for anyone you care about.
After shoulder surgery and a hip replacement, my 67yo Brother was sent to Newtown for physical therapy on both shoulder and hip. His time there was a nightmare.
He arrived on Monday & I spoke with him (long-distance) on Tuesday. After Tuesday he was always “asleep” or so drugged that normal conversation was not possible, no matter what time of day it was. A nurse told me that he was being given pain-killers, and also an anti-psychotic (which seemed to be different each time I asked). I asked to speak with the doctor about this, but instead received a call-back from an APRN who was not helpful.
On Saturday a Newtown nurse called to say that my brother had been given Oxycontin & Haldol, newly prescribed that day by a doctor who had never seen him before. The combination had caused him to become confused, uncomprehending, and incoherent. Also, while in this state he attempted to get up and walk, and he fell. (Was no one with him?) He was sent via ambulance to the hospital.
I told the hospital that he was NOT to be returned to Newtown and he was sent to a different facility for physical therapy upon discharge from the hospital.
Throughout his entire 6 day stay, I was unable to reach Newtown via phone most times when I tried to call. I would get either a busy signal or no answer. I finally figured out that the main number is the only one which works and/or is answered consistently, and that the nurses' stations & patient rooms seem to be on a separate system which is not working properly. Also, at one point I was told by reception that there were only TWO NURSES COVERING THREE FLOORS of patients in the wing where my brother was staying (which may explain why he was apparently unattended at the time he fell).
Newtown was taken over by the Athena Healthcare system sometime in the last two years, so they should have had adequate time to fix any problems inherited from the previous owners, but there obviously still are problems. Athena has been buying up many local nursing homes to create a for-profit network. Avoid this facility!!

Masonicare at Newtown is a very good place and seemed more affordable. It was an older facility but had the best outdoor spaces to walk around in. It has a skilled nursing facility, so if there needs to be a progression of care, it would be much easier to make the transition. It was a very nice facility.

I visited Masonicare at Newtown. The place was very nice. The staff and the residents were very nice as well. They had a lot of nice services, but they were just out of our price range. The place is elegant and homey.

I chose Masonic Care for my aunt because it is close to me. They have a memory care floor and a nursing home. The staff was helpful. The rooms were big with big closets and a nice, clean bathroom. I liked the surroundings; they have ponds and beautiful rock walls, and it’s right in the woods. The dining area was very clean. The people living there seemed very happy.

My mom is in skilled nursing at Masonicare. They have nursing and doctors on staff. The staff is accommodating, friendly, and informative. They have room exercise programs where you can sit in a chair. They were in the middle of renovating so that’s part of our waiting list because they were repainting. It’s clean and homey, and they have animals that come and visit.

We were really hoping to get mom into Ashlar because it was close to where our family lived and it was a little more affordable for my mother.

The Ashlar of Newtown Assisted Living Facility was well maintained and the staff were professional and friendly. The staff treated the residents there not as patients but as capable human beings. There was always enough activities going on to keep the residents busy and entertained. The Executive staff there were amazing and compassionate.

Ashlar of newtown has a very peaceful setting. Located on a peice of property which is very quiet and has many very nice landscape features. Myself and residents take walks around their pond located on the property. The cleanliness in the faucilty is also very good and they also have many activities for the residents to attend such as a convenience store with free popcorn ( which many residents love to take time out of there's to enjoy a bag), hair dressers on premises as well. Over all I've been going to ashlar of newtown since I was in high school and I enjoy donating as much time as I can because not only is the welcoming atmosphere great but the staff and residents seem to brighten up my day more than I brighten up theirs

About 4 months ago, I had to remove my father from this facility. The director had changed 3 times in a year and a half as well as 3 changs in head of nursing. A number of other employees left. The staff was cut way down. The food was awful and care non existent. I would never recommend this facitity to anyone. We moved and found a wonderful place for half the price. People are treated as guests, moral is way up and the food excellent. A nurse is available until late at night. No comparison.

My husband's mother stayed at Ashlar of Newtown for 3 years, and we were all very happy with the care she received while there. The facility is well staffed with with friendly caring people, and questions and concerns were dealt with promptly. The social services department did a great job helping us handle the arrangements when she moved in, and were equally helpful when she passed an short while ago.Ashlar's rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable, and there were nice lounges and common areas for my mother in law to socialize in. There were many activities planned throughout the week to keep her busy: bingo, tea parties, crafts, movies, sing-alongs, etc. And we were particularly impressed with the weekend activities that encouraged family and members of the outside community to participate. The staff did a great job of communicating with us regarding mom's health, therapy, and social calendar. We were also immediately made aware if there was anything mom would be needing in the upcoming months: sweaters, stamps, stationary, etc.Ashlar was a great place for my husband's mom to spend her last years. She was able to receive care she needed, while still managing to stay active and social.

After my mother had a series of strokes, she needed 24/7 care. Not to mention physical therapy. Her stay at Ashlar was by far one of the best in such a horrible situation. Visiting her was a pleasure as we could wheel her outside and sit by the water. All the staff is very friendly and informative. The patient as well as the family seem to be their priority.
