The property is very nice-looking, but unfortunately many residents are very unhappy about the food. It keeps getting worse, and people there don't feel comfortable speaking up when they are dissatisfied. It seems to me some of them are intimidated and don't want to rock the boat. I'm unhappy about the lack of activities for my parent, too. I feel like the administration there should be warmer and more caring. You know, show they have a heart for old people.

The Peninsula Regent ranked very highly. The community was fantastic. We got to talk to some of the residents. Everything there was good. The location was great. The rooms were a little bit older, but the general-purpose facility that was shared was all recently updated, and it looked very nice. Mainly, it was the community there that made it the most attractive. They don't have memory care. They took us around all the general facilities. They explained things as we were walking around. They have a gym that's very nice, and they have personal trainers on staff. They have a pool. All the things we were looking for, they had, from that perspective.

My wife and I are in our early 70s. I still work a couple of days a week and she does occasional babysitting for our grand kids. We moved to The Peninsula Regent (TPR) just three months ago and absolutely love it! It's all we hoped for and more. We had investigated a dozen such facilities in the Bay Area and, in our opinion, TPR was the best. At the risk of sounding like a paid endorsement, here are the reasons we like living here: (1) you actually own your condominium, rather than paying a high entry fee that isn't recoverable (or one that's twice as high and is 75% recoverable). (2) The people--both staff and residents--are so friendly! This place has a very welcoming feel to it that we noticed as soon as we walked in. (3) The building--which is 10 stories tall and shaped like a cross--has 207 independent living condos and 20 assisted living studios. It's kept in excellent condition. Friends who saw it thought it was new, though it's actually about 30 years old. (4) The food, despite some negative reviews on this site, is actually quite good. There are a few duds now and again, but we have about a dozen menu items each night from which to choose. A bistro is also available for light breakfasts and lunches on weekdays. (5) The location is superb, right at the edge of downtown San Mateo. We have an easy walk to shops and restaurants without the noise they might generate. And, the Caltrain station is four blocks away. The downside is that the monthly fee, though less expensive than the other places we investigated, is still pricey. You will have to have planned for your retirement to afford to live here. Once you get over the sticker shock, however, you probably won't want to live anywhere else. In addition to a financial screening, you will have to pass a physical and mental test to qualify to buy in. So, if you're considering this kind of living, don't wait until it's too late. Enjoy a carefree lifestyle as long as you can.

We visited Peninsula Regent about a year ago. It was super. The atmosphere and the apartments were all excellent, and the staff members were super people. It was a beautiful place with great service and good food.

I was very impressed with Peninsula Regent. It’s not near my home but I’m familiar with that area. It just seemed like a nice, clean well run place. It’s established, and been around for so long. The people who work there seem to know what they’re doing. And they all speak English which helps. I didn’t hear any complaints from the residents as well. The rooms are alright; they’re not wonderful but they’re quite satisfactory. Friends of mine live there and are happy with it. I’m nearly satisfied. However, its kind of expensive.
