Portola Gardens was huge. The people there seem to be good and very friendly. They're really on top of things and very detailed. They showed me both assisted living and memory care. They've got an outdoor garden and it's a pretty enclosed area where they allow the residents to go out (of course they have somebody with them). They can also grow things there and it's nice. They had a lot of bathrooms and everything looked pretty clean. The rooms looked pretty good size. They had a group thing where people were singing and they had a van where they could take people out to do things. The pricing was a little higher than I expected, but it's a little bit cheaper than the other facility we saw. The lady that gave me the tour was knowledgeable and friendly. All the people were pretty nice. It's just kind of institutional and I think you can get lost in there.

I went to Portola Gardens. The outside is beautiful. When you first walk in, it's beautiful. They've redone it but they still have old rooms, and I wasn't too happy with that. The rooms were still back from the 1970s or 1980s. The rooms are still old. They were clean, but they were older rooms. From what I was shown and from what I was told, they're able to give excellent care. Their kitchen area seemed to be remodeled. It seemed to be in excellent condition. They have nurses and staff that are available to help. They were a little high-end. They have everything that a patient on their own can go and do. They have a library and a recreation room. They have everything an assisted living person would want. My mother needs more help, so I wasn't looking into that as much because I realized she needed more help.

Portola Gardens is a gorgeous old historic building in San Francisco. It is in a beautiful area, right by the large beautiful McLaren Park. They have a large backyard, and there were residents that were hanging out in various places. A lot of the caregivers appeared to be pretty happy, good, and had a positive warm rapport between the Director, the residents, and the staff there. The rooms were relatively simple, but it had high ceilings and lots of lights. They do furnish it, and I think there are maybe some flexibilities in there. Each room has a sink, while only some of the rooms have private bathrooms, and I think there are some different options. Everything is very very clean, and they are expanding and opening a new wing.
